The article has it spot on but it can be simplified into two very important ideas: 1. Keep asking questions until you hit a nerve and find something you have in common with the person. It also works the opposite way. You can find a point of

I hate start meta discussions about HN but I think the negativity has a lot to do with the community changing a bit around here. The thread about DuckDuckGo a few days back exemplifies this and there was a discussion of it just yesterday. B

I waffle back and forth between agreeing with you and disagreeing with you as I've asked myself that same question time and time again. Right now I agree with the one caveat being that awful design can only pass when the information present

Wow, as of this writing the vast majority of comments are just so negative! Do we have to hate on everything? I like it! It looks way less tacky than their old watermark. In fact, it actually makes the photos look better compared to the old

The thing about criticism, especially negative criticism, is that you actually shouldn't always listen to it. Everyone's got their complaints but not all criticism is created equal. You have to strike a balance between pleasing your custo

You won't read their free book that you would have otherwise liked to have read because they don't distribute it in your preferred format but instead in 2 very ubiquitous formats that are easily converted? Really? This is not a personal att

I can't argue with you. It's not what you actually said, it's how it was perceived. What we say and what others hear in their heads as they read are often out of sync. I really wouldn't worry about it though. Despite that minor issue some h

I'm right there with you, man but what got people riled up is the way you mentioned PHP and MySQL. It came off a lot like a lot of posts by people who just really enjoy insulting anyone who doesn't use Ruby/Python and Postges/Any NoSQL DB.

You're right about that first sentence but wrong on the rest. Editing files on the servers is pure idiocy even if you're using the system Panic does with an exact clone of the production server for dev changes and script that syncs them. Ev

Though the page might not be effective as a landing page, only 12 click throughs is still underwhelming for a promoted tweet. Now Notwerk has 12,000 new followers. So now I'm curious to see what would happen if the landing page was reworked

I totally believe you but I also have a feeling you're part of that very small minority who it works for. There are just some industries that lend themselves better to this kind of marketing than others. Ecommerce sites are in this category

I regret mentioning HIV. I just thought stigma and that's what popped in my head first. And yeah, I do wish to respect that privacy and if he's not going to say it then I wouldn't press him. But it is natural to really wonder when you read

It really looks like social media marketing is just a whole lot of hype. It's great for brand awareness but it's rare to see anyone report a boost in sales from it. I've been working in web development, focusing primarily on small to medium

Any clue what that condition may be? I hate to be that nosey guy but it's just human nature to wonder when someone drops a bomb like that but doesn't give you much else to go on. Do you think it'll be disclosed later? That's really shocking

True but most businesses are small business without the time or resources to really do the research. Every unemployed twenty-something is now becoming a "Social Media Marketer" and telling small business owners they have to get on Facebook

I think design is the most important thing. It's your first impression and you have to make it a good one. If there were a website that cured cancer but it looked ugly upon first glance people probably wouldn't stay on it long enough to fig

I don't care how overdone to-do lists are, I never get sick of them. Putting this together in 3 weeks is impressive considering your background. The UI is really what makes it. Todo lists are really straightforward from an under-the-hood pe

Amen to that. The minute someone utters PHP someone else inevitably goes out of their way to let you know it sucks even if it's not at all relevant to anything you're talking about like in this case. Guess what? Every language, framework, t

I resent the implication that I'm a troll first off. Secondly, after reading a lot of the responses to what I wrote I feel like I've been vindicated. I have to admit that I was wrong about Microsoft arbitrarily applying policies unfairly. I
