gnome-terminal does support bracketed paste[0], and both bash 5.1 and zsh 5.1 enable it by default, so if you paste into it it will input a newline in the prompt instead of executing the command [0] https://en.m.wikipedia.org

Can't you use a "sanctioned" VPN to tunnel your connection to a "real" VPN or any wireguard endpoint? They could still be able to find out you're using a VPN, but not monitor your traffic.

WireGuard is pretty minimalist and has great defaults, AFAIK if you manage to set it up you're good. Unless your credentials leak, of course, but a security expert would have that same risk.

Oh yeah, I feel your pain, my brain is really used to Rust/Swift and Python syntax, and when I have to read Typescript/React, C++ or something like Nix, it gets hard for my brain to parse it. Loved the eyesight analogy!
