I once had a crap work laptop that continually crashed. Every crash counted as one use - and that was incredibly annoying. So I'd rather something like one use equate to one day.

Similarity/convention is actually a good thing for the consumer - as long as it is by sound design.

How about just timing out threads, making them immutable after a predefined time limit? Once immutable display the final scores. Though I realise this won't help in the here and now.

While I like the idea of visually being able to filter comments. I'd like to say that my eyes cannot tolerate HN's default colour scheme (and most other websites). Which means I use my own style sheet. So I don't even see dimmed down vote

Believe me, they won't ever appreciate code quality - they just care that it works. Clients get more hung up over a typo than clean markup!

You need to show them one unique feature that they like and find useful. It could be a plugin/extension. I'd suggest you say it's good practice to have the latest software installed. And in the case of Internet Explorer - if they are usin

The automation is such a huge win. Algorithms can be run on the network to highlight anomalies in microseconds. A Facebook profile is better in someways than a thumb print or DNA. Net-citizens can be automatically character profiled. You

Quite exciting this IE resurgence. It's a good reminder that you can't sit on your laurels - you have to keep innovating - and/or push yourself ahead of the pack. To the average Joe - what makes the new Firefox any different to the last ve

I didn't say anything about trust. It was merely a suggestion to look at Iron or talk to the developers as they promote their product as an alternative to Chrome along the lines of privacy. You'd think they'd be in a good position to point

I assume you mean you'd rather the title bar wasn't there - for your net book. Which is a fair comment. I guess you could run the browser in full screen mode. Though full screen doesn't suit everyone.

It's indeed odd. The 'title' is the meta element, that is incredibly useful! It deserves attention. Not to be lost. That's not to say tat I don't like slim tool bars. I also prefer uniformity across the desktop and this feels like a devia

Not sure about nuclear being the greenest, when you take into account mining for ore. I appreciate these were exceptional circumstances. But to be confronted with a nuclear disaster of any proportion is horrifying. Then it becomes an envi

Not wanting to change the topic. But why on earth would you even consider nuclear power generation when you are in such a geologically unstable area? Sounds like idiocy to me. Fingers crossed here, could do without another man made disas

Well speed isn't everything. I choose to run a bare bones web browser - without plugins - precisely because it is easier for me to read. I'd take a kindle over the iPad if it was easier on my eyes. I know that wouldn't suit everyone - but

The Ubuntu naming landscape is currently confusing. I particularly dislike the names Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu and would like to see them all go. I picked the netbook edition for a laptop - thinking it might be optimised for long batter

I think that's a good point. You can still have a functional web page working in an older browser. Graceful degradation. I use a modern browser, but I turn off a lot of the functionality - so the web works for me. Accessible websites ge

Get one of those fm transmitters, and use old radios in each room for music. Or carry a ghetto blaster or computer speakers and a portable player from room to room. If I need a tv in another room. I carry one in there. Not sure how good n

Oh to be able to run around a garden with a chainsaw. Sadly I like in a block of flats, and you'd be glared at for smoking outside. Lucky you.

That noticeably hits my cpu. I monitor CPU use in the task bar out the corner of my eye, and that was the very reason I abandoned Flash. Flash ads used to lock up my old G4 frequently. Perhaps if Flash only ran in your active tab - or rath

Interesting point about the future of the web. That's a horrible idea that HTML 5 will be able to run rampant in my backgrounded tabs - certainly an itch that needs scratching...

Flash is such a waste of CPU cycles, I disable flash, and lots of other things in my primary browser. If I need to view flash I'll fire up chrome.

I don't even know if I'd agree that alcohol is worse. I guess you are in part referring to David Nutt's research. I'm sure his findings would be different if some of the other drugs on the list were decriminalised or legalised. The media
