As a white person, on some level I don’t care about “hate speech” against my race. Sticks and stones, etc. I like to think that I’m strong enough to not be affected by such things, and the prevailing ideology tells me that it’s nothing comp

Even if they were… they’re pretty great games. Roblox is what originally got me into programming, and Minecraft took that further. I probably wouldn’t have the software job I have today without these games. Fortnite is fun too, and paying f

The amount of support for drug prohibition in this thread really surprises me. Why shouldn’t an adult have the freedom to smoke and put themselves at high risk of lung cancer? If it’s “for their own good”, what makes the government the best

What makes you say that? I love to hate on Microsoft, wouldn’t touch Windows with a 100ft pole, but I always give credit to Microsoft for VS, VS Code (and my favorite languages, TS and C#). I admittedly haven’t used Visual Studio in a while

For my personal image gallery, I have a script to include the image dimensions in the file name when I upload. It’s kind of a hack, but it lets me compute the final image flow based on the file name before any of the images have loaded.

At a certain price point, it certainly is an appropriate expectation. Even at my job, where all my work is laid out for me in the form of Jira tickets, fulfilling unsaid (or unknown) desires is hugely beneficial for my team, company, and ca

What if I’m aware of the image scanning wasting my CPU cycles, just like I’m aware of comments wasting my brain cycles? I don’t think my “rights” related to accessing my OS software is much different than my rights related to accessing disc

Couldn’t you say that about any piece of history you’re not interested in? This comment is needlessly dismissive.

How does making the school free solve that specific problem? Wouldn’t the taxpayers foot the bill for whatever the price is? At least with loans there is some consumer price sensitivity, even if it’s lowered via use of loans.

How do projects like LIGO ever get completed? I’m probably totally naive here, but I thought LIGO is physically larger and has many difficult constraints. The LHC comes to mind as well, and that absolutely dwarfs ITER in physical size. What

Yes, those are valid use cases. I listed alternative use cases for which communication with Amazon is irrelevant. Besides, I would imagine that “purchasing things with voice” is used much less frequently than the functions I listed.

For the examples I listed, the fact that they’re serviced by Amazon is an implementation detail. People are not buying it to communicate with Amazon , they are buying it to get something done. Many would probably be just as happy “to commu

I don’t know anybody who has one to “communicate with Amazon”. They have one to listen to music, make grocery lists, set timers, etc. Who wants to communicate with Amazon? I’m being downvoted, but the parent comment asked “why would you buy

I’m surprised to not see fish listed. When I was a kid my dad would receive live fish from saltwaterfish.com. They would show up in insulated containers, alive, if a bit stressed. I guess they must’ve come via one of the private mail carrie

Policies like this will cause the rich, who have extreme mobility, to leave your country. Maybe to some people this sounds nice, but generally it will lead to worse companies and less innovation.

The resolution and detail on a “real” camera is killer for me. I can save photos with the crop much more easily. Also, portrait mode is good, but nothing beats real bokeh.

I hate FB and Google, but I don’t buy this argument. It doesn’t pass the duck test for me — doesn’t look or quack like a utility in my view. I am sympathetic to the argument though. Getting locked out of your existing Gmail account could be

Well, baby steps and all that :^) At least it’s not a hand-rolled, “enterprise-grade” (read: extremely verbose with unnecessary abstractions) pile of spaghetti. I’m slightly scarred from my brief stint at a large finance firm.
