Is it a hard requirement to handle wifi as well as WAN routing in one box? If not, I can recommend OPNsense from personal use for a couple of years now. I bought an inexpensive fanless mini-pc from Amazon maybe 10 years ago, and started out

This is potentially a huge step up -- Amazon's purchase of Kiva was a big strategic acquisition, and they made some incremental improvements to that system but as the article stated it was "pennies" vs the "dollars"

Somewhat similar, but I owned a Toshiba Libretto back in the late 90s and the keyboard was quite compact. I could still touch type even though my fingers were all right next to each other, so it's not a deal-breaker.

I was in a DSP over the weekend that is ~20 miles from the closest town of 1,000 or more, and after about 15 minutes I was able to see the Milky Way pretty clearly. I could also see the faint glow of 2 cities maybe 40 and 60 miles away on t

While this book is getting a little long in the tooth (the title needs to be inflation-adjusted now, I suppose), it's still a fascinating read. The authors considered "self-made" to mean that the subject did not receive monet

Interesting that the article didn't mention the oddly named "sosumi" system sound.

As a former merchant, this was not my experience -- I recall seeing a notable difference between fees on similar transactions, and the tracing those differences back to rewards cards.

I live in an area with great fiber internet service (gigabit synchronous unmetered) thanks to a rural electric co-op. It worked here because co-ops still have a fair bit of political power (in my state anyway).

Happily I haven't had to buy a car since 2020, but I had good luck using cargurus to spot cars that had sat on smaller dealer lots for awhile. I understand that some dealers take out loans of their own to cover the vehicle while it

My mother had a heart-shaped "triangle" (about a foot across, so much larger than an orchestral triangle) that she used to call us in when dinner was ready. As a kid who did not enjoy hauling wood, my hearing was exquisitely tuned

Have you looked into JS8CALL? It uses the same bones as FT8 but allows for longer exchanges.

I bought one of these from the second kickstarter wave. After waiting about a year to receive it... It didn't work with my carrier. I waited a few more months with no updates or ETA on support, and then I returned it.

I have a capisco that I bought last year off craigslist for twenty whole dollars. It needed a patch on one of the arms, but since then I have spent an embarrassing amount of time in it and it has held up like a champ.

I'm a 20+ year dvorak user, but if I was starting over again I'd probably go colemak.

Growing up in a rural area, I have mostly good memories of roosters crowing across the road. I have no idea where the trope of crowing at sunrise came from, as they seemed to do it 24/7. Also, "smells of the countryside" gave

This seems to be in the same vein as "you can't be allowed to record your call audio," I suppose because you might theoretically use that capability to break the law.

I also fell down the rabbit hole earlier this year, and eventually I learned that keyboard layouts are like the pirate code: they're more like guidelines than rules, really. I don't know why I felt weird about modifying my persona

Tangentially, I did not fully appreciate the usefulness of pinch/zoom resizable web pages until I was recovering from eye surgery. Sites that did not allow the page to be resized (on my phone) might as well have been blank.

Since we're currently in a solar minimum (which reduces the propagation of radio signals here on Earth, and generally makes it more difficult to make long-range contacts), you would expect innovation to be happening in... making contac

In the late 90s I had a co-worker who managed to wrangle one of these at our office. I think he tried it for a few weeks and then returned it. I solved most of my RSI problems at the time by switching to dvorak.

I was fascinated to hear a recent news story about how this works. The US has a long history of subsidizing its dairy industry (not unlike other countries) and part of that has been a "price floor" on milk. This floor applies to r

I still consider this model the apex of trackball design, and I have regretted selling mine for over a decade. The way it allows the use of both thumb and index fingers for pointer control is something I haven't seen replicated elsewhe
