I do something similar. There even used to be a lovely website that had a text entry box which would delete words if you didn’t keep up a certain words per minute. It sounds daft but it was actually useful to use at least a couple of times

Or substantial social changes. Rents and other costs would presumably need to change if this affected a majority? Edit: what I’m pointing to is that hunger is often in the context of sufficiency.

Whether free for all drug use would be more expensive is an empirical question and- if it displaces any alcohol use — the evidence would be strongly that it would cut costs, especially if basic standards for purity were enforced.

(especially) if you have left this business you should blow the whistle on this. Have you thought about doing it? What are the main barriers?

Edit - ah, I think you mean politicians? My comment still stands though. I don’t know the polling in the US, but spending on social programmes in Europe is broadly inline with public opinion, so the insunuation of a democratic deficit is mi

That’s factually incorrect. Cf most of Northern Europe for the past 60 years.

Im returning to this late but I think the comment is disingenuous. My post made it clear that this is an uneasy compromise. I’m not sure what the solution is, but -a the moment- apple seems more aligned with my interests than google or the

Right. But that is illegal and in my view also immoral. If you want to change the law campaign for it. But breaking tax laws is not a victimless crime. You are freeloading/stealing from the rest of us.

I’ve had limited success combining the results of pyannotate with whisper transcripts (based on time stamps). It’s ok, but the quality of speaker identification is nowhere near as good as the transcription itself. I’d love to see models whi

I actually want a printer, but know this and have put off buying one for about a year now because I can’t be bothered to spend hours working which is the least shitty.

I’d be more sympathetic to this if the Spotify interface wasn’t just so terrible on all platforms. There’s not much innovation at Spotify, except perhaps in the legal department.

People talk about the Linux kernel vs linux (the complete system). I’m not sure why nerds are still litigating this sort of thing years after the who gnu linux thing.

I think the “too many eggs in one basket” is really the only thing that persuades me. I don’t care that random developers have to workaround annoying restrictions and pay 30% to apple because it means it does just work and I don’t have to t

A lot of the suggested mitigations made a lot of sense to me. For example reducing time to prepare grant applications, or to add 1s jitter to stock trades. Perhaps there are flaws to these specific ideas, but the thing that struck me most w

Probably. But you might not want to work at a place where this is at the whim of a manager. Or where your non rock star colleagues are treated like shit.

Some rules are not allowed. Not allowing remote work is still allowed, but I don’t think it’s far away from being socially unacceptable. Being legally unacceptable is just one step beyond that.

I don’t disagree with this, but it is a form of whataboutism so it doesn’t really undermine the original point that some MSM are also terrible actors. Press in the UK is bad, but I don’t yet see it as this bad.

A cheap phone would work for that. But they are noticeably laggy and kind of grotty to use, especially once you’ve used something nicer. Kind of like going back to an ancient PC.

We have sold our public spaces for big tech companies to monetise, but basic functions like preventing fraud must now be paid for again? It’s a form of blackmail. Don’t want to be impersonated in an important public forum? Pay up!

Peer reviewed work has a much higher bar for people to say stuff. If you want to know what academics think, as opposed to what they are motivated to write and get past a reviewer, you need something like twitter. Plus, some academics are i
