The problem with c# + postgres is you still have to run it through Npgsql which is much, much slower than the native SqlServer drive microsoft ships with the .net framework.

I was struck by that too, the "I wasn't going to mention this before, but now, here it is." nature of it was strange.

The video doesn't do a good job of explaining this at all. Ultimately the reason why adding more roads to a system produces more traffic is more people take cars vs. public transit.

I am not sure how clean the reflect() function is in swift right now as it stands. reflect(User()) requires me to new up an instance of the object to reflect. This is a static(ish) language right? Why do I need to reflect a specific instanc

monkey patching specifically is pretty heinous in c# but can be done. you should avoid monkey patching in almost any situation though. one point of yours that i don't understand is the ability to reason about what methods are being cal

Honestly a lot of the cases presented here would be accomplished by a robust reflection API and some form of dynamic method compilation. These are both things I haven't seen in Swift yet and will miss dearly from .net/C#.

Based on the differences between ++i and i+=1 alone I would think that there are just bugs they need to squash and that the open beta, and all these eyes on it, are going to help find the cases that are stumbling. Also, for many of the test

I know they said on stage that they've spent a lot of time getting Swift fast, but aren't we still in beta? Isn't it a bit early to throw Swift under the bus for performance reasons?

One of the things I look for in a language right off the bat, as it's a sign that powerful features can be built as libraries later, is some type of reflection api. There appears to be none (though attributes seem cool).

We use nginx as a load balancer on its own machine and distribute requests to a small farm of machines running windows/iis. Nginx is great as a load balancer, not quite as sophisticated as HAProxy but the SSL support is good and it get

If this was a serious question, the serious answer is that I type a good order of magnitude faster than I write by pen and paper. And the ability to delete is useful.

If it isn't broken, don't fix it. I am tempted to try this for my own writing; the only thing I'd want to figure out is a sane way to get files off of it without having to resurrect a floppy drive.

In python's case (or other dynamic languages), honestly not sure. In statically typed languages, you can catch a lot more errors at compile time with ORM's than you can if you write queries by hand. Good unit tests are critical re

so what this is getting at more is that lambdas are a critical part of a language; the "genericness" they provide keeps you from having to write a sort method for each of your types. instead of three separate functions for len, sw
