I remember differently, the release of digg v4 was the last nail in the digg coffing and the tipping point happened about a year before that with the famous ncomment 'Digg vs Reddit' webcomics. When this got to digg front page, we

Myspace was designed from the get go to be sold to a big company so it has little inherent value. Rupert Murdoch bought Myspace for quite a sum as an attempt to get into the online business because all their attempts failed miserably for a

Valuation is bullshit. When this bubble will burst a few trillion will go poof and the cycle will start over. 60+ billions valuation for a company losing over 2 billions a year or one third of their total revenue, seems like a big pile of h

Talk about biased numbers and interpretation. Revenue is growing but losses are growing too, so revenue is not growing fast enough. 7 billions of cash means Uber will be broke in less than two years depending how much faster losses are grow

It would only a surprise to people who may believe that companies are worth what they're valued, people who do not understand that investments are bets. Ever heard of bubbles ? Well they inflate until they burst in a poof where a few t

Ever heard of the DARPA Grand challenge ? The first edition way in 2004 and the project aim is to have one third of US ground military vehicles autonomous by 2015. It seems the US DoD has a quite a headstart on waymo.

It is a matter of point of view, how many waymo car have been sold to customers ? how many waymo cars are out of the waymo car factories every months ? There are several things to tackle and different approaches to things, the DARPA grand c

I wonder where you get this idea, pretty much everything points to facebook being in control. Even when you have never registered with them you are profiled and tracked.

IIRC this was something Cory Doctorow addressed in a talk or book, right now we can do something in the digital online realm, but as soon as this hits public space we're fucked and it had already started at the time.

Why would it be sinister to have an automated eye able to instantly sort humans in dubious categories ? Maybe in a different political context where one category is sent to death camps, another to forced labor camps, etc.

by bigbugbag 9y ago
It was sinister 20 years ago (probably even before that but I'm not aware of it), and was a problem enough for the industry that they looked for way to condition the population to accept the technology over a few generations.

You're supposed to come out at night with a countermeasure masking your face and destroy the billboard. IIRC the countermeasure is quite easy and requires something like a LED and a battery, but I may be wrong it's been 10+ years.

You'd have a point if this was a general statement, but in the case of automated facial recognition it's almost universally despised across the world. If you're not sharing this position it could be that you are younger or ha

If you were actually against it you would not take part of making this happen. Inadvertently spill the name of the company making this and those wanting to use it to the public so they can receive their well deserved backlash.
