What about starting with F#? Because it's M$FT, there might be more appeal for the skill from an employment perspective.

My short term ambition is to really learn the paradigm in order to become a better programmer overall. Where it will lead long term, it's hard to say at the moment.

That's a really good point, thanks! It may be easier to get funding for the R&D portion as a POC for the overall endeavor. Well worth asking at this point.

I totally agree with your point. I am working on this in parallel with the hardware spec because my main financial stakeholder is pushing to create the project budget.

Excellent, thank you! Since I use AWS now for other stuff, this approach makes the most sense.

Or even better, I'll ask a guidance counselor for Linux advice. She'll know the answer. Thanks!

Thanks! This deal would be priced at an hourly rate, and the work driven by the combination of their internal departmental and project managers. From the looks of it, they'll create all the requirements and I will code. The gig's duration

At some point, this does become an economic decision. Java does seem to offer the most in terms of use on the job. C++ is really strong in certain verticals like finance.

I was poking at Bloodshed Dev-C++ to test it out. Seems pretty good. Any experience with it?

Thanks for the book tips! These will help after I make my choice. How about IDEs for each?

C# would put me in the money if I go .NET after school. But is it used enough in applications similar to Java in Hadoop to make it worth learning?

I am seriously bummed by my lack of choices. As always though, I want to make the best of it. If I said that ultimately I wanted to use either language for distributed computing applications, which then?
