Google could provide (paid) update services for handset makers or carriers. The incentive for those to pay for this service would be that those devices would be much more attractive for customers. As a consumer I would be willing to pay mor

Since in your eyes the iPhone is the _first_ smart phone that qualifies for "any levels of success" it is of course the most open. I think several smart phones were successful (at least in europe) and had a more open development environment

He is implying it could be compatible: "Flash’s cross-compiler, we know, is explicitly ruled out by the new Section 3.3.1. Where MonoTouch stands, however, is not yet clear." Or isn't he? How is Flash explicitly ruled out and C# is not?

"MonoTouch is not in the same boat as Flash’s iPhone compiler, as it’s not a cross-platform framework." Did Gruber read Section 3.3.1? It says: "Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by th

"...the AirLife 100 is ready to operate on the network of any U.S. carrier that chooses to subsidize the device. " Does it really have to be subsidized by a carrier to run there?

I really do not care about Flash. What I care about is the freedom to use any programming language that I like or see fit for the problem at hand. Section 3.3.1 is not only banning Flash although that would be wrong too. It bans _every_ oth

What's most interesting to me is how the security of GSM will hold when GSM stacks in mobile phones can finally be tinkered with. OpenBTS provides the opportunity to program and test your own baseband software. Think about fuzzing GSM tower
