I am with you here. The manufacturers should not be allowed to call their phones open if they lock the bootloader so you cannot install unsigned images. But Android as a platform is still open. The same way that Linux is still open.

The easiest way to find one depending on your location might be ebay. There are a lot of new & unused N1s on ebay.de and ebay.com

The Nexus One is a consumer product. You do not have to be a developer to buy it nor is it special developer hardware. Those other devices are still closed because people still buy them. Vote with your wallets and you will have freedom.

Apple could be much more open with iOS and at the same time be not less integrated. How does the whole AppStore policy make iOS more integrated? When I am criticizing Apple for iOS not being open I mean it is not open to run any application

"...or given me any more control over my Droid X..." Why did you buy the wrong phone? It was all over the news, that Motorola locks down the bootloader. How is that Googles fault? How does that make Android less open? What about all those L

You have all that freedom with Android. You have the control over your device with Android. You don't have it on every device. But how is this Googles fault? Android is so open it can be closed down by anyone. But there are Phones that are

You mean: You can't deploy your altered version to any device Assuming you did not break it while altering. Then you can always deploy your altered version to the ADP-Phones. For example the Nexus One. And this is not a theoretical possibil

I use the emulator for continuous integration. Its really helpful for unit- and integration-testing. Combine it with Robotium and you can thoroughly test you application across screen sizes and Android OS Versions.

As a development phone the Nexus One is the best choice. You can unlock the bootloader and install Android from source after that.

How can one more market fix your problem with too many markets? The Android Market by Google is not as good as it could be. So it is good that there is the possibility of more markets. The market will decide who survives and who will not. A

That's the good thing about choice. By buying an Nexus One (or an ADP1) you can do all that without _any_ hassle. That choice is not available with any iOS-device as of now.

The Droid was definitely not the high watermark for openness. The ADP1 and the Nexus One were and are. The Droid (aka Milestone in the GSM world) was the first really successful Android phone though.
