Is it me, or have there been an uptick in new writing platforms? Two that I can think of are substack and reading.supply. It'd be interesting to see an open source competitor to Medium; developments in and usage of markdown editors is

Personal blogging and discover-ability are reconcilable: why doesn't someone build an aggregator where people can submit their essays and write-ups with RSS feeds?

Not sure if the idea that Bitcoin acts as an hedge has much weight considering it’s never been tested in a first world economic downturn; arguably, it has worked in third world countries which face high inflation and have a lack of public c

If Libra succeeds as a payments network and platform, then it’s possible that the only fee will be from fluctuations in exchange rates; this is in effect a zero remittance fee. Libra itself can still make money by investing the float (money

To compute the text differences, are you using the HTML/DOM and rendered webpage to extract the text? Or are the method for each diff separately determined? I'm curious to what the input and output of the ML model consists of.

We used a Gaussian process on the outputs from a CNN, not separately. What I meant by locality is the idea that two points which are close to each other should also have predictions close to each other, assuming that there is some underlyin

The n parameter there was the number of datapoints, not the size of the inputs (that would've been way worse). For brain imaging, is the 100k parameter also referencing datapoints, or dimensionality of the input? Chapter 8 of the Rasmu

Compared to training the CNN, running a GP on the outputs seemed like a worthwhile tradeoff of time if it resulted in a discernible difference in validation error; and the original authors of the paper we were following already had an open

+1 This is how I solved for the optimal parameter: instead of inverting the matrix, which is memory-heavy and computationally expensive, I used the solve function from scipy.linalg. I looked into numpy and scipy methods for symmetry and spa

That’s the difference between a data structures and algorithms class versus a systems class: in the former the constant in front of the Big O doesn’t matter while in the matter it does. Any good CS curriculum would have both courses.

Implementing Gaussian Processes in Python is a fun way to practice your programming and mathematical abilities. I was working on a course project that used GPs for regression, with the inputs taken from the output of a CNN. We were trying t
