(a) is indeed written by a machine, (b) is excerpted from a famously awful poem, and (c) is an unintentional haiku found in the New York Times. I agree with what you're saying about art, but it's far afield of the point thewarrior

Why do you believe this? I have some familiarity with natural language processing and think that generating passable computer poetry is a fairly rudimentary task. Tell your model about meter, tell it about rhyme, learn word associations.

It is supposed to be mutually beneficial, but it isn't. A lot of this is getting driven by for-profit schools. The loan burden at for-profit colleges tends to be higher than non-profit colleges. Their share of DoE loans is about 25%. T

This one is actually kind-of, sort-of obvious. For NaNoGenMo this year I smushed together word2vec and a POS tagger. What the authors have done here is really cool and goes miles beyond my hacks, but the kernel of the idea should be obvious

What failure mode are you worried about? Yes, the author has a definite incentive to self-promote. At the same time she's produced a testable artifact. I think her claims about predictability are bogus, but the rest of it we can trivia

PCG is a family of PRNGs. Any sensible member of the family will trivially pass TestU01 BigCrush. If you use a 32-bit PCG it's going to necessarily fail BigCrush. PRNG design is an empirical science. We can implement a generator and th

I haven't looked closely enough at their choice to evaluate it, but there's a good reason not to use Mersenne Twister. MT is a bad generator. * The state size is 2kb * It fails some rudimentary statistical tests * The output is tr

The examples here seem to be for doing pattern matching (with wildcards) on portions of DNS query packets. That's definitely in the range of things you can't coerce the pcap filter language to do an even adequate job on.

Back in 2010, I had a chat with Nick Patterson (one of the authors on that Nature paper) about the admixture problem. At the time, he was looking for an efficient algorithm for reconstructing ancestral trees subject to admixture. What he di
