HIV is believed to have first infected humans in the 1920s where it traveled up the Congo before arriving in Kinshasa. From there it radiated across Africa carried by truckers. Like you say, I haven't seen evidence to rule out rural ci

Yes, thank you. We need to look at the overall risk. To pick an extreme case: The unvaccinated IFR of rabies is close to one, but there hasn't been a rabies fatality in the US since 2018.

The data has never supported that covid is less dangerous than flu in kids. In the first year about 300 children in the US died from covid. Social distancing collapsed flu cases nationwide. There was a single childhood flu death last season

The spike protein is under selective pressure. It needs to bind to ACE2 in order to reproduce. This constrains its mutational landscape. The viral envelope, for example, isn't similarly constrained and can undergo neutral drift. It wou

This is not a credible concern. Vaccination reduces the infection rate. Among vaccinated individuals who suffer breakthrough infection the time at peak viral load is significantly reduced.

Rather than increasing efficiency, I'd be concerned about loss of function in the error checker. This would spike the mutational rate (and the mutational load).

I'll echo that this is a reasonable assessment. In evolutionary hill climbing, the fitter a protein the fewer paths there are to climb higher [0]. Art Poon has some interesting work that effectively maps viral phenotype space by lookin
