I was at Defcon this year. I must say that technical content in all but a handful of talks was non-existent. From what I hear, it wasnt always like this. It has degenerated into a sad reflection of the conference that it once was.

I did not say that. But they will need a 3rd party auditor to certify that Gmail is "secure" -- whatever that means. SOX has caused more pain than transparency..

Another trend in memory technology that I have not seen the mainstream media talk about is the "memory-bandwidth gap." Memory technology has kept pace with Moore's law (in the case of SRAM) or has failed to do so (in the case of DRAM) where

The choice of desktop vs web for email boils down to whether you are an individual user or an Enterprise. I suspect that Xobni is targeting the enterprise. Otherwise, I dont see the point of an outlook plugin. Software as a service has been

Interesting observations -- esp the one about Google being an active participant and influencing the direction in which the Web is headed by interacting with other players like the SEOs. This is very similar to George Soros' notion of refle

Very impressive! Its good to see YC having grown from an experiment to something thats represents a 1st step towards marquee VC funding. Khosla does not invest in a whole lot of web based ideas these days (mostly focused on alternative ener

Adobe is one company that has made all the right moves in recent times (acquiring Macromedia being the prime example). This elephant can dance. Every product they have to offer is a de-facto industry standard. It comes as no surprise that t

Factors working against a merger are largely cultural. M$ is run by geeks. Yahoo until recently was being run by an ex-Hollywood exec. However, the fact he Jerry Yang has now returned to the helm might change things a bit.

A lot of the comments seem to focus on influencing the lives of lots of users. That would pretty much cut out the entire Enterprise startup category wherein a few 1000 IT admins are enough to take a company to profitability. Of course, empl

Its seems that search (at least text search) is more or less a solved problem. Trying to innovate in the search space today is more or less as futile as trying to innovate in the operating systems space about 10-12 years ago. Noone really c

Well.. its not so much the vaporware aspect of things... Succeeding in search today is all about scaling. Only the big three have what it takes to build huge data centers. A startup the size of powerset -- not really. Natural language searc

Boston based VC's turning down all those deals comes as news to me. The laser sharp focus on monetization vs. utility is quite possibly the difference between a HBS type and a stanford type.

I for one have never quite understood the whole argument with how gmail "reads" people's emails. Yes.. it does get a little spooky at times. But how much more spookier is it than Google (or for that matter any other search engine) keeping t

In many ways, both Boston and Silicon Valley have a lot in common -- cities with character that attract likely startup founders, world class universities, a well developed VC community and so on. But they differ in a couple of ways (1) Bost

So the basic premise of your writeup is you are trying to judge how smart people are based on what they submit to this site and the content of their comments. I am not so sure I agree with that. It seems to me that starting a company requir
