I can't see a relationship between polymorphism and structural pattern matching. Both could be label "dynamic dispatch", but the mechanism is very different. While polymorphism can be implemented efficiently via vtables, i don't know of a m

Dynamic dispatch is not syntactic sugar for a if-cascade. It is normaly implemented via vtables. If you try to do this in a language without polymorphism (e.g. C) you have to do this by hand and keep track of your vtable layout (third funct

What kind of code was that? It sounds like churning out boilerplate stuff in flow state. The passive one should be able to join to debug failing unit tests and to listen to your thoughts.

I don't think system simulation is possible. The dreaming tests essentially work by prooving that you can't keep much "state". Learning by repetition is something i heared repeatedly. I have no personal experience, but it seems to be a Matr

17 years later: Plan9 is going nowhere. That commercial spin off Vita Nuovo ( http://www.vitanuova.com/ ) is quiet. The Linux and Solaris monolithic kernels are still strong. Minix3 doesn't really progress ( http://groups.google.com/group/m

If consciousness is computable then it is also computable by a Turing machine and a computer. Consciousness is computable, if there is a formal model. The core question is thus: Can we find a formal model of consciousness (aka intelligence)

rabidsnail was probably talking about a "formal definition" not a short description in a dictionary. The key to artificial intelligence is to develop a mathematical model of intelligence/consciousness. Something like "An intelligent being i

To calculate something like "60% heart failure chance" right after birth doesn't seem to possible to me. Too much depends on environment, bad luck and habits. That "60%" would have a deviation of 50 or something and be nearly useless. That

I would call it a surplus of skills, but a surplus of paper. The problem is that the paper you get at the end of your higher education isn't worth that much anymore. Experience is still worth something, though. So an employer is better of t

I'd think of a design like a file cabinet with every drawer being its own fridge. This way you can even set different temperatures. The stacking is variable so suitable models for every kitchen should be possible.

I think the author misunderstood "Worse is better". Worse is not better because it is somehow more attractive to users. It is a better strategy, because by releasing early you get additional resources to continue building the big vision. Co

Your processors fetches a whole cache line at once anyways, so it isn't more memory reads. The memory address needs to be aligned to 16 byte, though.

It probably is the researching/browsing king of people. Sometimes when i find a good article via HN and i go exploring for more good stuff from the same author/website. This leads to more interesting things, which i could submit to HN.
