I’ve been working in digital rights and advocacy for years. High rhetoric isn’t how you change things, it’s long-term commitment to meaningful action that must be sustained or it will falter. My annoyance is that I’ve had this discussion a

In the age of SaaS I’ll take it. It’s not like I have a few million dollars to pay for training even if I had all the code and data.

Because I’m in the same market now and they are my competitors so I can’t monetize my work at cost if somebody else is taking my labor for free and undercutting me on price. These aren’t hard concepts.

Also, that code tends to be proof of concept, full of bugs, and never audited or used in production. Academic peer review doesn’t include code review.

Cool, I’ll send you my land lords banking info so you can pay my rent, the info for my kids childcare, and where to contribute to my retirement account. Also, for what it’s worth, I’ve forgone millions of dollars in compensation over the ye

There’s no greater certainty than rolling your own and building your own stack. If you want perfect reliability, use the standard library of a language and nothing else. It’s actually possible. Ironically, the best open source projects are

As somebody who pulled down an open source project I find this trope of FOSS losing its way for greed utterly disingenuous. People need to put food on the table, period. I’ve had people take my work and make more money from it than I have,

I didn’t say there are any. If you want to clear $1M/year enshittifying the last remains of the internet this is Mecca. There’s truly no other place you can have a pick of such a wide variety of social parasites to work for.

DC is pretty upright in general, whereas I believe Philly is a very loose place. Philly definitely has more of a creative class than DC, but there’s still things happening in DC.

And where, exactly, do all these bay area artists live? The other cities all have some sort of semi livable areas for artists, SF has nothing to offer in that regards. Likewise, people in South Bay lack the sophistication to appreciate anyt

If you want to work for a big aimless Megacorp, or one of their pets (Anthropic, OpenAi, etc), sure come to Silicon Valley. Make damn sure you get a nice cut of equity on top of the salary. Otherwise, the cost of living is ample reason to

Exactly, Pittsburgh PA checks all those boxes with a fraction of cost of living and crime. Also, way way way more artists - because they can afford to live there. The art scene in the bay is actually really bad.

The link tax is a red herring and a poor understanding on the part of legislators. The real issue is pre-adtech publishers kept 100% of ad revenue and double click now takes a massive cut (which they briefly touch on). All that cash flowing
