Aren't these discussions the evidence? The fact that the author wrote a blog post and we are here discussing it. I might be missing the point of your question. This is everywhere around us in the development world. Anytime people compa

I don't understand the question... If someone has a strong opinion, and they have arguments for their opinion, but don't recognize the significance of the context in which they've formed their opinions, they have blind spots

Only software engineers pretend best practices exist outside of any useful context. - small localized team vs big distributed team - bug fixes and incremental improvements vs green field poc - saas vs system scripts Context matters, and if

That's a good point, but there's probably a bit of nuance in there considering NPM serves a solution space to the entire spectrum of developers using a technology, and Wordpress to users in need of web content management features.

When I started CS decades ago, our student passwords for our server accounts were all similarly generated. They were given to us on a slip of paper, of course, and I still remember the two I was given over 20 years later. I was (naively) bu

I find it ignorant to categorize languages like this. There is nothing about javascript, php, python or java keeping you from using the explicit approach described there.

I think the whole point of a type fully understanding the constraints of your data suggests it would ideally. Typescript is able to do this with strings when using templates. type Suit = "C" | "D" | "H" | &

Kinda but not really. It actually handles type inference on string concatenation, but doesn't understand math. type N = 1 | 2 const x1:N = 1 const x2:N = 1 const sum:N = x1 + x2 Typescript (the version running on my box

I don't think that's what a selection bias is. If I have two cars, and electric for getting around locally, and a guzzler for road trips, you wouldn't call it selection bias if I always chose the guzzler for the road trips. Y

Right, and they are, that's my point. Quality isn't a single attribute of a system, it's a judgement call based on objectives. The objectives of a business selling software, and that of engineers is something else. Sometimes

I agree, and take it a little further. 10 engineers couldn't agree on the _point_ of quality code to begin with, let alone define how to get there. Consider two programs: 1. The spaghetti mess, half-done abstractions, inconsistent uses
