I think on average the ceiling for US is about 4x higher than UK and the avg salary is about 2x. UK seems to be about £43k ~= $59,879 [0] average and software dev in America seems to be about £79k ~= $110610 [1]. Both stats from Indeed whic

Its worthy to note that I've never felt Java has had something as nice as Rails/Django/Phoenix/Laravel. SpringBoot seems to be a cluster of libs instead of a full package like the above listed with a nice community and a

Honestly? Who cares about cost savings? Computers are stupidly cheap slave workers and are easy to spin up compared to dev time. Does it actually matter in almost any profitable business? The speed argument is a much better argument imo, bu

Also one of the reasons I'm looking forward to Java's Project Loom. It seems Go/Elixir/Java have went for the `virtual threading` path to simplify the dev experience greatly.

Agreed, but I think an SPA feels like optimizing way too early because of how far it seems you can get now with Hotwire etc. Also with the pace of SPA's at the moment its a risky bet 2015 React code is nothing like 2021 React code with

Do social media sites really need to be SPA's? Does Twitter or Reddit really have to be a SPA? Do Reddit really need the UI = f(state) paradigm? Is there much of any complex cross component state sharing that an SPA would be valuable t

The mental model of UI = f(state) is really beautiful. And I got it explained to me that its best to use an SPA when you have 'interrelated, dynamically updated state' from Tom MacWright and I very much agree. The issue I had with

Soon it may be Svelte for me as it simplifies the React data model for me a lot... But there goes all the ecosystem again for React/Angular/Vue libs and docs. Then we repeat until someone figures out a better way to develop on the

I've seen this comment before when it comes to turbolinks and it is a pain but if that is what I'm giving up to avoid doubling my state with an SPA, writing a ton more code to create an api and then writing more to hook it up to s

I'd also be a little wary of Kotlin unless its for Android dev. Java is catching up a lot with Kotlin and it even looks like its going to have a much more powerful pattern matching story than Kotlin https://mail.openjdk.jav

On his point about payment gateways possibly being better for Rust I currently work in a system with a <10s SLA for a payment flow and boring old Java works fine with the whole Kafka/OpenShift/Microservice craze setup. And this

Ah okay in that case that makes much more sense to me for the threaded version, I was meaning fake threaded in the sense only one thread is ever ran at a time but of course they are scheduled onto different OS threads like you say which mea

Do you have any tips for people coming from Ruby land on how to model things with a more functional approach? For example I've been watching some of 'On Writing Software Well' series https://www.youtube.com/wa

It sucks that people keep using gross salary instead of net because it really makes a difference. Lets take an example, with a yearly salary of £100,000 / $122,247 / €109,654... (all same amount) In the UK you would take home £66,

I thought about this but its all about balance, money spent in your 20s and 30s is more valuable than in your 40s. That doesn't mean don't save at all just be balanced with a slight tilt towards saving more.
