The traditional wisdom is that carrying a gun for safety doesn't help in such sudden events, as the "bad guys" are generally more prepared, have the initiative, etc. This is obviously different for instance in a war, where both parties are

Yep, this is a major part of GNOME3 that most people haven't yet noticed. Thanks to it being done in JavaScript, you can hack your desktop like a web app: https://cannonerd.wordpress.com/2011/12/22/hack-gnome3-like-... This includes stuff

You can see some decrease in the number of contributors: https://www.ohloh.net/p/gnome/contributors/summary However, note that the current slide in the numbers is something that only happened after February-March 2012, which was when the

With Midgard we've been using some GNOME libraries like D-Bus and libgda on servers for years. And this will bring the whole set of GNOME libraries to Node.js: http://bergie.iki.fi/blog/node-gir/

This is the same problem with The Economist's digital subscription. Really annoying full-screen click through ads between a lot of pages. And generally these seem to be just one or two different ads in one issue, so they're not interesting

Slight update to this old blog post is that now dnode-php runs with ReactPHP ( http://nodephp.org/ ), and so PHP-as-server should perform a lot better even with multiple clients.

Well, when you bring back a programming concept invented in the 70s, there can hardly be much new about it. But at least I'm being quite honest about this on the NoFlo website: FBP itself is not a new idea: it comes from a term IBM used in

Unfortunately most of the real-life NoFlo stuff we've done is handling business logic in client projects, and so is quite sensitive. One older example that is open source is http://bergie.iki.fi/blog/business_analytics_with_couchdb_an...

I admit, I probably used a bit stronger words than warranted, but this is entirely due to the frustration on the constant state of public IT procurement failure in the country. Anyway, I'm quite well aware how the RFQ process works. The pro

Everybody in the Finnish software business knows that much of the public procurement happens over various "old boys club" arrangements, and "surprisingly" usually ends in the hands of the same two or three big IT providers. Finland used to
