Funnily enough, last week I released an Android app that does a similar (although not quite as cool) thing: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hughesoft.... The main motivation was to be able to get

Study Stoicism or Buddhism (if you don't like the religious aspect, it's easy enough to only focus on the philosophical - that's what I do). There's a surprising amount of overlap between the two. I always liked Buddhism

Tmuxifier ( https://github.com/jimeh/tmuxifier ) is a great utility for scripting tmux layouts. Well worth checking out if you have complex layouts you want to be able to recreate.

At work we have non-devs (mostly scientists) using our repos, and I didn't want to have to teach them git. Mercurial is much easier to pick up IME. With the right plugins enabled, there's not much I miss day to day compared with g

The VsVim extension for Visual Studio is actually quite good too.

Pretty and neat, although I echo the sentiments of others on the use of "expert". Especially when github is where I do side projects, not stuff I'm good enough to get paid to do.

In the context of Epictetus' writing, "they" in fact do not hold power over you. That is in large part the entire point of Stoicism.

I do a similar thing. As Epictetus said: "When you do anything from a clear judgment that it ought to be done, never shun the being seen to do it, even though the world should make a wrong supposition about it; for, if you don't act right,

That mirrors my experience with Amazon too. Although it was 3.5hrs of full-on whiteboard coding, I really enjoyed the process and felt like I learned a lot. 3 of the 4 interviewers were excellent.

Funnily enough, I just wrote something similar in node[1] and one of my mates has just written one in Go too. Great minds, or something :-) [1]: https://github.com/benrhughes/crashdown

Because it's taken me less time to write my own thing, that does exactly what I want, than it usually takes me to configure and customise wordpress. Also, (and this is the main reason, really) it's just a lot of fun.

This would have been perfect around a year ago. Once the writing was on the wall, I migrated 4 or 5 sites (kinda, mostly) to self hosted Wordpress. I would have happily shelled out $5/mth to go to posthaven, had it existed. Because WP bugs

Thanks for fixing it :) The app itself is really nice. Seems to do exactly what I'd expect. Nice and simple. Good work.

FWIW, with C#'s object initialisation syntax you can cut that down to once too. eg public class Foo { public string Bar { get; set;} } var foo = new Foo { Bar = "Hey there" };

I think the author is being a little uncharitable to MS. While he's correct that the whole company isn't going OSS any time soon, there's a decent number of projects that are "fully" OSS (as in they take contribs) and even more where the so

This is nice, but I'd like it to go a step further. I have my default branch set to 'dev' so that that's where pull requests go by default (otherwise I end up with pull requests going to 'master', and having to manually merge them). However

At my last place we used Trello from the day it came out (and had used fogbugz for years). At my current place we use jira + agile. I do prefer Trello for high level stuff, but I think jira does a good job of handling both high level and lo

I really, really like the interface. I'd love to use it for my blog, but I'd want a self hosting version. I've been burnt too many times by hosted/proprietary writing platforms. If you're not keen on self-hosting, I'd want: - the ability t

A few months ago I quit Twitter after being a fairly heavy user (24k tweets in ~4yrs). I found one of my now-best IRL friends on Twitter, and a lot of other people I care/d about. But more and more, it seemed to create an emptiness in me. O

1) Discourses (incl Enchiridion) by Epictetus, if you're interested in happiness and contentment. 1a) A Guide to the Good Life is an easier introduction to Stoic philosophy if you don't want to dive straight into Epictetus 2) The Black Swan

MVC is great for managing the display layer, but it doesn't really cover how to manage your domain logic. IME, MVC scales best when the "model" is a logicless DTO created by a business layer. For small scale apps this is overkill, and you c

This is understandable, but a bit sucky for me. Since day 1 I've hosted todotxt.net's installer files on github, and the project's landing page uses the downloads API to link to the latest version. Thankfully I changed the app to link to th
