The worst thing is that translated into normal speak that's actually a reasonable sounding proposition: "We use our experience in this field to provide practical advice to our clients which helps them improve their way of doing business and

How about a lawsuit insurance scheme? Pay $X per month and if you get sued the insurance company will take the case to court and pay any damages. This would kill the effortless €600 extortion scheme, and probably also DDOS the court system.

The article is over two years old and looking at the source it seems like the site he was working on ( http://www.papsonline.org/ ) is still Drupal. Would be interesting to know the background story is there.

It looks nice, but for all I know the conference I was booking was using that. My primary pain points were Paypal and the separate search, booking and payments for flights and hotels, which lilregie doesn't solve.

One thing I'd add is: Once a problem is escalated, put the customer in direct contact with the higher level support. Triage is fine, but not being able to communicate with whoever is working on your problem is really frustrating.

I disagree, at least from the perspective of a customer. One hosting company I like to work with used to answer competently within anything from 10 minutes to an hour and this turned me into an evangelist. The prompt answers also made me a

IANAL, but I have had to deal with trademark issues and as I understand trademark law you would be considered to be in exactly the same market. The difference between, say, pet food and hosting would be considered relevant, not between stor

I'd like for these redesigns to start by listing: #1 The problems they are trying to solve #2 The qualities of the current design they need to preserve. The discussion could then focus on whether the two lists are valid and how successful t

Good design is, amongst others, making sure your headline font isn't too thin to render nicely on your target platforms and your body text is easy to read. It is also avoiding pie charts in general (see Tufte for an explanation), and defini

I'm curious to see how we are going to navigate this data. I'd love to see an etherpad type slider where you can see a page evolve. Or could we have a search of the entire history of the internet? Or search and browse the internet "as it wa

I think the author nailed it with his "excuse he didn't admit to" paragraph, i.e. it he was afraid it would fail. As long as you haven't actually failed, you can still fantasize about retiring a billionaire in two years time. It takes a lot

I had a similar thing happening to a submission I made the other day. It quickly climbed up the ranks, then it dropped to 27 then it vanished. However, about 20 minutes later it got re-instated and spent most of the afternoon on the homepag

The problem is discoverability. I've had an ipad since 2007 and had no idea about most of the gestures he mentions. Novice users would get horribly stuck without the one no-brainer emergency exit that the physical button offers.

Consider, for example, this very site. This is where I think design is misunderstood. The minimalist design of this site is likely a huge component of keeping the debate at the level that it is. In my book, that is great design - not cre

Come to think of it, another way to address #1 would be a smarter auto-throttle. The ideal setup would be for it to use the entire bandwidth but yield instantly to any other traffic. Alternatively, a "day / night" setting, which is what I d

I take an occasional image of the hard drive to avoid needing a reinstall and use a combination of Backblaze and the Win7 backup for files. I'm very happy with Backblaze. Less so with the Win7 tool. In any case a remote backup is a must. A

Unless I'm misreading this, it only mirrors your drive with no history. That's a poor approach - if your drive starts packing in you're likely to backup a fair amount of corruption before you realize what's going on. Ditto if you screw up -

Satisfied Backblaze customer here. It's unintrusive in daily use and the few times I've had to restore a file it was painless. The fact that it is remote also means that it is fire / theft / water damage proof. Since we've got the Backblaze

These are all improvements, I'm sure, but I'm less convinced they help address the problem I've most often confronted with on large projects, which is roughly this: You need to make a change to a specific item because it looks crap on a spe

Assuming you are serving static content, a much easier method is to use a CDN for all your assets (including the WP generated pages). It might cost a little more for big spikes, but it makes you completely immune to almost any amount of tra

"Agile is not a silver bullet" is more to the point, and applying it dogmatically can counterproductive. But regular communication, short, well defined sprints and a prioritized backlog available to all can do wonders in terms of getting a
