Why is this different than buying a newspaper — in the case I'm talking about, you're also getting a constant stream of new content, which you obviously don't with a newspaper. (I'm genuinely asking)

In this case I'm talking about apps where there is a constant cost to providing the app (i.e. it's a service) — rising the price doesn't fix the problem, a paid subscription would be the alternative.

If you're using a machine where you don't have root access it makes managing ruby installs and gem installs a lot easier.

Looks fantastic but too expensive for anywhere in Europe other than the UK, maybe consider using Royal Mail for elsewhere in Europe too?

I would much rather come to a stage where people aren't going to think ill of someone because of something stupid they did as a child.

I think it's unlikely that you're ever gonna reach a point where it's reasonable for a family but with say 10 executives who are paid thousands of dollars an hour, then it starts to make sense.

Yeah, it seems to be quite a common problem at the moment. Look at Twitter; more specifically Digg, who have suffered from this for years and are only now getting out from it.

I have never really understood (or perhaps know where I stand) on the issue of software patents, this article did not help. "What is most alarming is that patent office automatically publishes applications online after the 18 months ... Thi

I am not stating my point clearly, sorry. My point is no business could be built around search if all the implementation was "free" (in the FSF sense) because how would any business have an edge which allowed them to be competitive. Perhaps

The fact of the matter though is that it is not financially viable in any way (or ever will be) for all software to be "free" in the sense of RMS "free". How could a company like Google, built fundamentally on trade secrets, ever be develop

In response to software which requires a lot of development time to create, specifically tax software or games, RMS says: > The reason I don't use nonfree software is that it would take away my freedom. I don't want to let that happen.

How would this work out though? As Facebook is owned by so many different investors now, they can't take away what they paid for?

The problems one solves in basic web development is to be honest, kinda boring. For most websites it's just CRUD (create, read, update, delete); coding in this case is just a form of glue. Coding gets interesting when you're solving and imp
