Hmmm... How about a one's complement system? For example if A owed B 24 dollars, A would wear the bands 1100111 = -24 and B would wear 0011000 = 24. This way, they would only need 7 bands between the two of them, yet each person would

Rhinoceros horn is not used as an aphrodisiac, rather to treat fevers. (of course it doesn't actually treat fevers either) That aside, there are quite a few people who have misconceptions about medicine; it seems noble but very difficu

How else can we evaluate good if not by it's value? I understand that not all the benefits of college are monetary, but we need some unit of account to describe the immaterial gains of a college education. Would you rather a billion do

A person gains some $N in financial gains and personal fulfillment for going to college. Regardless if tuition comes from the individual or the taxpayers, the society as a whole is still paying some $M for a person to go to college. Society

Yep! And believe it or not, you can do a ton in the browser. Aside from heavy duty programmers and creatives, most people can do everything they need to in the browser. Pretty exciting, isn't it?

Magnet schools can fix this issue. If you have 10 high schools, running 1 as a gifted program and the other 9 as before should not cost significantly more. Of course, people complain about negative effects on the remaining schools [0] on th

Wouldn't the button still call back to Amazon every time you click it? Even if it doesn't purchase anything, I don't need Amazon to know my assorted button-clicking habits.

(sidestepping any politics and instead discussing grammar) Anyone know why the use of demonyms as nouns is inconsistent? "American" is used as to denote one individual, while "Chinese" is always used as a collective noun

That's the reason I used GDP per capita instead of after-tax income. Even if employees do not need to pay for insurance, retirement, or schooling, the nation as a whole still has to.

Although Switzerland and America may have very different work cultures and social support policies, that's not the most obvious difference. Consider our per-capita GDPs (2013, nominal dollars)[1]: Switzerland 84,748 United S

Yeah. Python has the functional programming features I expect of any modern language. However, I feel that Python has a lot of unneeded syntax. I always prefer apply() over * and map() and filter() over list comprehensions. func(*args

Huh. So they are really talking about a pressure. 1 kWh/(acre ft) = 2919 Pa It makes a great deal of intuitive sense that the quantity that describes how hard it is to move water over a path is a pressure.

It doesn't seem at all practical. Given a maximum yield of 30000 lbs/(acre*year) [1], and with an area of < 16 square feet, we get < 1 pound of coffee a year. Maybe you could grow something else. Flowers, strawberries, herbs

It changes the allocation of resources. Let's play with some numbers. We will say that 5 people have the following monthly incomes [ 0, 500, 500, 2000, 3000, 4000] Our economy only makes one good: bread. There are 1000 loaves of bread
