TBF there's currently a massive perverse incentive in that we want to encourage creators to create, but then allow the successful ones to retire making money from past works.

If I write an OS in Basic, surely the 'natural' language for exposing the system calls is Basic? Yes Unix predates C. But at this point in time 50+ years down the road, where the majority on nix users don't use anything that

On the other hand some people have things to ward off evil demons, and aren't bothered by evil demons. The parent has actually done the thing, and found no issues, I don't think you can hand wave that away with a biased metaphor.

A thing can be good and bad. Everything is a tradeoff. The reason why C is 'good' in this instance is the lack of safety, and everything else that makes C, C (see?) but that is also what makes C bad.

Yes, but ultimately. Just like transporters, it was pulled out of Roddenberry's arse. We could have have a long debate about how society would work if transporters were a thing, but that doesn't make transporters possible. The exa

By what metric? Around me it was all sheep farming or weaving. It seems to me having the agency to choose your own hours, to be able to collect fire wood for the fire is better than on paper earning more, but being in a slum a family to a r

Yes plain text is mentioned in the last paragraph, but the article isn't about that. I'm sure you could set up word to just output plain text, you can set up excel to deal with CSV. That would not be congruent with the entire rest

Maybe I've been in Linux land too long but sending a file to a printer seems pretty obvious to me. Yes it's transformative in a way, but you could equally argue that my word document with A4 layout is a digital version of a docume

There's a printer icon in windows and *nix. Many icons represent things that have wildly different forms. People and cars look different, but road signs manage to portray these things.

So if they're reusing the shell, they passed the savings on to customers right? If this were a £10 mouse then this excuse might be valid, but it isn't.

Right.... So.... Add some charging circuitry. Is it a problem if people don't use it as a wireless mouse anyway. Yes it's very apple to force users to use devices how Apple wants, but that isn't a particularly good reason.

I don't particularly see the problem with Libre office. But then they talk about collaboration and we've had that in the form of wikis for over 20 years, so I struggle to think what else this, as yet undefined, new thing needs to

I think the main issue with CGI is that it makes it easy to have big space battles, so everything is. You see this with TNG v DS9. TNG would have one alien ship in an episode at best. It forces you to write story. Come DS9 and you can have

What about catenaries? Trucks aren't going anywhere. I'm guessing 95% of lorry traffic is on ~5% of roads, small battery for the last mile and power lines for long distance.
