To take a minimal case for an example - if I hire two people, pay them $20,000 each to produce widgets and then sell those widgets for $100,000 a year respectively, and keep the remaining $60,000, would you consider that exploitation consid

It's a classic "great man of history" narrative, painting a Randian picture of the world being pushed forward by the overwhelming efforts of a few people. The reality is that nobody works hard enough to earn a billion dollars

Does Anybody actually use milliard? Here in the UK million is a thousand thousand, billion a thousand million etc. I always assumed that was the same for our mainland cousins.

I can see a resurgence of social democracy coming soon as the problems with things like real estate investment and unrestricted emissions come home to roost. We've already seen a little bit of that with Bernie Sanders.

Plus you want to encourage models like a housing co-op - they're pretty good for keeping people's housing costs down and building community relations.

Well, thanks for fighting for standards adoption, even if it didn't work out. It's always good to have interoperability represented on the inside.

Quite a few! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_cooperative I think it's a valid concern to ask about incentive alignment - if you're wanting to do a tech-for-good project, you probably want to make sur

Yup, my family minecraft server fell victim to that. Thankfully it was a new map with only a couple days' work into it, but annoying nonetheless. Whitelist your private servers!

Cash spent on an activity does not reflect the time that it takes, doubly so if you were able to reduce the administrative layers involved in eg health insurance.

A small percentage of today's work goes towards these things (except the Internet, which is an endless sinkhole of mostly pointless labour).

There are a couple of issues with UNDO too: - (not intrinsic) many interfaces only give you a few seconds to undo your action, which wouldn't help in this case - (intrinsic) some events can be layered on top of your change, meaning tha

Wealth distribution is not the same as class conflict, it's an effect of it, but yes class division has existed since civilisation began (not so much beforehand though). In feudal times it was between the aristocracy and the peasantry,

Yes the problem is class conflict, not a handful of people. The handful of people are just a sign of how badly the capitalist class are winning the conflict.

The author did exactly that: > “I’m committed to that 99 cent price — when things go against you, you tighten your belt,” Vultaggio said on a Zoom call in early April from his headquarters on Long Island, N.Y.

Interestingly the Russian dashcam phenomenon is similar to "florida man" - it's availability bias. Florida has more published wacky crime stories partly because of their public records policy, and Russia has a lot of dashcams

There are sanctions that are worthy of criticism - the decades-long sanction on Cuba, for instance, even though I disagree with their regime - but North Korea is pretty transparently a despotic regime that should be opposed.
