Player of Games is the second book, and the one I recommend people start The Culture series with. The first book Consider Phlebas isn't bad, but it isn't as well developed as the rest of the series IMO.

Yeah despite being abolished in 1987, the lack of fairness doctrine took about a decade or two for the market to adjust (as conglomerates like Sinclair grew). We're only recently getting back to early 20th century sensationalism level

Which behavior? First Click Free was ditched years ago, but websites will still allow x number of free articles. Some don't, and still get indexed.

Many news websites won't paywall the first article from a Google Search (WSJ is one though). I'd be willing to bet in these instances you're using a traffic blocker or privacy extension that's clearing HTTP referer or so

That's just monthly newspaper subscriptions with extra steps. Better to do the music subscription route, where the user sub revenue is automatically divided amongst all the newspapers the user accesses for the month. IIRC Google tried

I don't think the local newspaper in their community would have broken the Epstein news story either. The Miami Herald is one of the largest in Florida, and where many of Epstein's crimes took place.

ICU survival rate is highly dependent on the cause, diagnosis, and/or disease that the patient is admitted for. It can range from 70-10%.

People were allowed in parks. The hyperbole comes here in that the parks closed during certain seasonal events that tend to draw huge crowds.

True, but it doesn't make sense to throw out the baby with the bathwater. From what I've seen being argued about proponents of defi (or smart contracts) is they operate on the premise that the centralized authority is the bad acto

Galileo's book was censored by the church because it insulted the pope. I'm not certain if that exists much today. Similar censorship would be curtailing mockery of public authority figures.

Misinformation and lies can directly cause harm - i.e. scaring/deluding people into not getting a vaccine for COVID-19. Any blatantly incorrect speech where the expression alone can kill others should be evaluated for censorship. Eve

I don't see how that is relevant here. Wash trading is market, price, and reputation manipulation, not money laundering or tax evasion. I'm not sure Coinbase's need to report money laundering applies.

Amazon, Ebay, Shopify pages, etc. It doesn't really matter because google shopping is (or was?) just search ads with pictures. Every item shown was set up and paid for in Ads IIRC.

You'd never get megaprojects built then, because no-one would reasonably commit to them given the risk that they undergo scope creep and the steepness of that punishment.

I don't think anyone expects a 100% build rate on these commitments, but like all funnels, a certain percentage of these projects that are having awareness raised now will eventually be built. Any progress here is better than nothing.

Whenever I see items like that, all I can think is embezzlement or tax evasion - but then again you'd think they would do that on less unique items (like $1200 for playstations).

Same, though Google doesn't enable it for users in different countries. It's weird to be able to automatically share photos with a partner with face recognition, but then they can't reciprocate for some reason.
