I've worked out of a few different places in SOMA now. There often aren't that many good places nearby. Even if there are a few, you get tired of them. At ZeroCater, we have dozens of restaurants, we add more frequently, and they're all hig

Is there intense competition? For the foreseeable future, no one is going to beat Amazon on price or UX. Seems like the winner could take all here.

As much as I'd like to be part of a community like that, you are wrong. The closest official definition of on-topic is "anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity." Many people come here simply because they're smart and bored.

As HN's population grows, the social motivation for "let's help is each other make stuff" shrinks. Maybe there should be a dedicated subsection (or a different site) devoted to that.

Isn't that like saying "yeah, but it would have to work"? Seems like you should assume I meant that. In your scenario, the good recruiters would not stand out from the bad.

Maybe there's an opportunity here to build a web-based recruiter reputation system. The good recruiters would be happy to stand out from the bad.

The Internet makes a difference in that it removes consequences. It doesn't change their motivations -- they think being mean is fun either way.

I agree, but "stuck in a dream" doesn't explain the events of the movie. My theory is that Moll knows (from the level where she jumps) that Cobb knows hows to do inception. She gets back to reality and tell people. The film portrays this kn

Don't miss the allusion ("Theirs was not to reason why") to the poem The Charge Of The Light Brigade. Into the Valley rode the 500. Very funny.

I completely agree that the hard bit is getting critical mass. I don't think video is necessary: there's already a proven demand for text-based chat, which is much larger than ChatRoulette's.

There are a lot of problems with tinychat. You can't even join multiple rooms. Of course, they have users, which is a pretty killer feature, but that's what I'm working on. :)

No, it's not actually IRC, just web-based chatrooms. That comparison has caused some unnecessary confusion. Embeddable is coming soon. The problem with making a web-based interface to IRC is that you're liable to get blocked like Mibbit.
