Hi Kranar. See my other post with the reference to linear bounded automata. I think you're right on all points. Also, I agree that "simulates" is probably the wrong word. There would be a one-to-one mapping between FSM states

Looking at Wikipedia, what I'm thinking of may be equivalent to a Linear Bounded Automaton. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_bounded_automaton Specifically, I'm thinking of the "less restrictive defi

My point, which I admit isn't very poignant, is that you can make an FSM that simulates a TM that only uses a finite portion of its tape. Yes, for some machines you will always be able to construct an input that exceeds what a particul

I edited my post to change the qualifier from " that halts " to " that halts on a given input ". Perhaps I should change it to say that you can build a FSM that simulates a machine with a bounded, finite tape. Obviously,

Not quite Turing-complete, but any Turing machine that halts on a given input can be simulated by a sufficiently large finite state machine. At each step, a complete TM state can be represented by a tuple of <TM state #, cell position,

If a court ignored the law and imposed a criminal sentence merely because it didn't like the defendant, then that would be an injustice and you would call the convicted person a victim.

This is my take as well. Terms like "egg-having partner" are inappropriate here because they are used solely to incite flame wars and to demoralize others. They are an impediment to the kind of curious discussion that HN strives f

2019 was excellent. Each day, the puzzle would have you adding new features (new instructions, addressing modes, input/output handling) to the emulator. The early days were fairly simple, but things got progressively more complicated.

The remedy wouldn't be to shorten lengthy sentences, but to allow women to have children while in prison. According to a quick google search, some prisons already allow this, possibly in part because of this issue.

If a woman’s prison sentence is so long that she would be infertile by the time she is released, then that may impact various constitutional rights. That was my point.

Preventing a woman from bearing children may violate her right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment (8th Amendment) and her reproductive rights under the due process clauses of the 5th and 14th Amendments.
