MetaFilter also works this way. Self-policing is a big part of the community [1][2]. There is a even a whole section of the site devoted to discussing internal stuff (called appropriately MetaTalk [3]). Sometimes I miss something like this

I remember awesome Google Tech Talk about sleep that mentioned sleep debt requiring full repayment. Dr. William Dement on "Healthy Sleep and Optimal Perfomance" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hAw1z8GdE8 It was linked from an older HN sle

Ah, ganzfeld. It reminds me of Altered States , a movie about sensory deprivation that went horribly wrong. I was fascinated by this movie when I was a kid. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altered_States http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbYT

I checked Deep Zoom Composer, software that was used to create tiles [1]. It allows also PNG tiles export for "SeaDragon Ajax" output type, so it was probably just the decision of the author of this site to use JPGs. I tried to convert one

My bad. I checked the source. Downloaded images are JPGs, it's canvas that make them look like PNGs. Whatever you will draw on canvas, it will look on the right click like "data:image/png;base64".

That's it. Now I realized I have seen a naturally occurring test case: Twitter user pages with and without static background images. Everything else is the same, yet the ones with the static background image (CSS => background-attachmen

Hmmm, I think it's computer speed. I use notebook with just a single core 1.7 GHz Pentium M. What's interesting is that for me page scrolling speed isn't spread over many values for different sites. It's either fast (majority of sites) or v

Are they aware of Resolver One? It's spreadsheet-Python mashup. http://www.resolversystems.com Sometimes I miss similar type of scripting. With Excel, I often finish copy-and-pasting raw data into Python string, upon which I then do somet

They do use PNGs for tiles. At least that's what I see with "View image" on the right click. Also it seems you could even have transparent PNGs in SeaDragon: http://getsatisfaction.com/livelabs/topics/vector_graphics_i...

Which OS and browser do you use? I'm on Windows XP with Firefox 3.1 Beta 2. I have the same trouble in release Firefox and latest Chrome. Explorer 7 and latest Safari is fine. Latest Opera is ok, though JayIsGames is killing its silly wait-

One extremely annoying thing that is rarely mentioned is very very slow scroll speed. I think it may have something to do with background images and/or transparency. Even some quite prominent sites suffer from this flaw (making them almost

I meant - "you would want to experience" - as in you personally (you = one human being). Edit: Sorry, I corrected my older comment, it was supposed to say "sensors and effectors far away from brain". You cannot effectively "be present" [1

Speed of light. If you would want to experience another world, you wouldn't want to have your sensors/effectors too far away from your brain. And it doesn't matter if you would be flesh or silicon. Even planets in our solar system are alrea

Ah, I'm blind. For $100 it's well worth it. It's completely different type of interaction, true 3D (actually 6D as you get also orientation). I would get it even without games, just for hacking. BTW they say it will ship for PC.

Everything old is new again. Magnetic trackers are fun, but they have been here already for ages. I used to play with Ascension's Flock of Birds [1]. You can get pretty accurate 3D position and orientation. Though these older systems were p

Email prioritizing based on karma? High karma could move your mail towards top of the pile for people that don't know you (VIP). Or posts/mails could be filtered based on karma thresholds.
