The extent to which it is natural is a diversion (as seen by the inevitable responses to your comment). More damning, I think, are the experiences that many women have said discourage them from being programmers, e.g.: http://geekfeminis

People who say that women are discouraged from computer science don't mean that women are literally told they shouldn't become programmers, either.

> I do concede, though, that I was overly facetious in describing what men do as "actual stuff". 1. It's not funny. 2. People actually believe that (even if you don't). 3. That's the problem!

It looked to me like you were saying that feminism has/had nothing to say about how women reinforce patriarchal norms, or that it focusses on men's behaviour much more than on women's. That's simply not true. Sorry if I've overreacted, the

This is a good place to start: http://finallyfeminism101.wordpress.com/ It's a rather broad resource, but to be honest I'm just starting to get into the subject. My earlier snarkiness was caused by frustration at how quickly people are wi

And even when it makes sense it can be pretty damned tedious. (Of course, for the "joke" to be anything other than self-indulgent the reference can't be all that obscure, so what's the point?) The convergence of "geek culture" and "internet

I didn't mean it as an attack, after all there is no accounting for taste. Unless you like XKCD, in which case you are a bad person and you should feel bad.

Ruby has a lot of web frameworks too. All your experience means is that you don't pay much attention to Ruby (which is fine, I'm only vaguely aware of the 3 you listed for Python)

The "like"s you use in your examples make your point a tautology - "writing an IDE like Eclipse Idea or NetBeans" basically means "writing a big DE". There are other models for each of your examples that can reduce the size and complexity o

There's a lot of waste involved, and a lot of suburbs get free rides on the infrastructure of the urban areas they're attached to. I don't know if they're evil, but it looks to me like they combine the worst aspects of urban living with the

I was just thinking to myself today, the internet needs more places for American right-libertarians to talk about politics. Good to see that Hacker News is stepping up to fill that gap.
