Rigidly-structured salary policies often remind me of no-haggle car companies. Sure, it's good for the unmotivated, but the best will probably go elsewhere.

Exactly. I've known very few companies (of size) where the history/cache/whatever of your local browser is of any importance. It's all logged and analyzed at the border.

I was referring to time spent on implementation details, not designing a product. In my book, good programming practices and having a popular service are not mutually exclusive.

The trend of companies being cheaper to start and the rise of angel and super-angel funds have left VC's without a place to make large investments? Isn't that the reason for the contraction of the "VC industry" in the first place? I think

Exactly what I was thinking. One of the first things that comes to mind when starting designing a new web service in my head is some minimal spoofing prevention. At least make them go to the effort of running a debugger.

The whole reason to even list any programming truths is because they would make you a better and faster programmer. Says who? Truths are not always good things . That doesn't make them any less factual.

I believe it. We have a couple kicking around the office and they're fantastic tools. You won't get my HTC Incredible away from me (Vz > AT&T, optical sensor > trackball), but the extra effort required to root and NAND-unlock it

I tried that when I started in the fall of '09 and it failed miserably. When I came back this summer after intensively studying C and computer systems in general, things went a LOT smoother. I'm not doubting your story, but it's not a har

This is a nonsense discussion. Finding a cofounder is hard because everybody is looking for a cofounder. If that's the case, I would think it would be easy to find a match, not unlike drunk college kids looking to hook up (but hopefully a

Most businesses don't need Knuths. They need "smart & gets things done". This can't be said enough. I so often see people get caught up on which technology, framework, or paradigm is right for a given idea (or worse, constantly revise

Good read. While I still like the idea and performance of Xen, the integration and up-to-date versioning you get with KVM on modern distributions is hard to beat.
