Greenmountain's link below (and the Wikipedia page for Rainbow Table) cover it, but you do a space-for-speed tradeoff by basically re-hashing your hash repeatedly, and looking up if the result is in the table, which gives you a short-list o

Google's web search by date works by parsing dates on pages, not by loading actual historical search data, so it's possible to backdate information with it.

It's not just that template, it's an "obvious" 3 digit number, a 4 letter dictionary word, and "123" with shift held down. If you had some sort of statistical password ordering it wouldn't be that far down the list.

In 2001 Java had much broader ambitions than the (large) niches it has found itself in. Java's zeitgeist definition of success back then was creating a "anything and a JVM running Java" software monoculture even more extensive than C's.

Javascript would be an obvious choice for anything centered around creating UIs. Palm-now-HP's nice WebOS platform is essentially a recent direct competitor to Android and did that.

How do you consider .NET and C# built on top of Java? They're certainly designed a direct competitor, with C# + .NET built to check every box that Java + JVM does, but most of the things in common between the two weren't new in Java. In th

That shouldn't be any harder than updating one pointer atomically, modern x64s have two-pointer sized atomic exchange operations.
