Honestly, I couldn't tell whether this was a satire. Does anyone know the author's intent: are they genuinely excited about the stuff in this post or are they horrified? My mind was so blown after day 1 of this advent calendar tha

All this explanation is great - as I said it would have improved the blog post to include some of that. I'm not arguing that it's not actually different this time. But I think they should have made the case in the blog post.

The planet would be better off if people moved out of the cold North and instead used more air conditioning. That's because heating is incredibly carbon intensive. Think about the temperature gradients in New York in the winter time. G

The article says Luminar's advantage comes largely from wavelength: the longer wavelength they use is absorbed more strongly by water, meaning it won't penetrate to the retina, even at higher power, which allows them to have much

The reason AI has been so successful recently is that the research community has assumed a ruthlessly empirical philosophy: no idea, no matter how beautiful or interesting, is considered truly useful until it bears measurable results on som

Of course, the meter was originally based on the shape of the earth as well - the distance from the pole to the equator was defined as 10 Mm in 1793. As far as the US unit tragedy goes, I think it's important to remember that SI units

This is a disaster for renewable energy and should be reported as such. The costs of such unreliable power are enormous. Such naive reporting does the world no favors.

The author forgot well to tank efficiency when looking at ICE efficiency. You don't get gasoline out of the ground, you get crude oil. In the middle of Nigeria or Venezuela. Which then has to be transported, refined, and transported ag
