I might not understand the article correctly but only the contacts seem to be made of graphene. The canal is still made of SiC with far lower conductivity than graphene so it seems to me that the speed improvements wouldn't be as tremendous

Well, the reasons I started learning PHP were: 1. It was the most popular web language when I started (in 2000), the alternative being ASP... 2. It's extremely easy to use and set up. Most starting programmers/developpers work on Windows. I

So just because you don't have the proper settings on your news feed, you're quitting facebook altogether. I agree that facebook is a lot less personal than it used to be. Personally, I rarely update my facebook status or stare at the newsf

The first graph doesn't mention units (thousands of US dollars assumed). No mention of the methodology used. No analysis of the results. The article is split into 10 different pages. Tab closed.

I'm afraid the author of this blog post doesn't know what a SIM card is. First of all, it's a secure element: it allows authentication of the user's credentials with the cell phone. SIMs and smart cards in general provide security at the ha

If you consider that an e-mail is a type of instant message, it makes even less sense.

That makes more sense, thanks! Here's the version I get if anyone's curious: http://i.imgur.com/HIb4d.png (Notice the 1 $ = 1 € conversion...)

Had to read quite a few comments to understand what was happening. Accessing the site from France, I only see Android apps and games. What is on the US site exactly? Movies and music? Would anyone mind posting a screenshot?

Pure speculation here, but would it be possible to use some kind of exotic Content-encoding HTTP header to avoid the DPI checks? Of course it would also have to be implemented on the server-side but that's another problem.

Exactly. I just spent 20 minutes reading the Wikipedia article on Kanban but I don't see what sticky notes have to do with JIT manufacturing...

That's especially true as the SATs are not very challenging... Anyone with a decent math knowledge can get a 800 on that part. There's no way to discriminate the very good students from the truly exceptional ones. Also your high school leve

I love how there's an unwritten rule to never talk about HN on Reddit. I never even saw it mentioned, and myself try to avoid mentioning it while I see talks about Reddit and proof that a lot of HNers are former redditors almost daily on th

The mere fact that SOPA uses DNS to identify particular web sites and their "origin" shows how little these lawmakers know about internet and its technologies.

It seems pretty weird to design it that way, using a global config. At least name it some other way to avoid name collisions. Maybe add it as an optional second parameter and define it as static. Also, the mysqli extension should be preferr

The demo is pretty cool but I have a few questions: - Since all the templating is done on the client-side, isn't it bad for referencing? Note that this isn't specific to Knockout but to all javascript templating libraries in general. - data

Actually one of the ways to prove that requires the fact that R completes Q. The concept of completeness was introduced by Cauchy in the 19th century and it might not have been completely popularised in 1869.

Is learning OpenGL from wthe ground up really the best way to go? The trend nowadays in programming seems to be to dive directly into the deep end. Wouldn't it be faster to just download a game engine like Unreal Engine 3 and go through its

I find this low too but the job title is "Astronaut Candidate". This probably does not guarantee that you'll actually go to space. If you manage to go through all the training and get on a real space mission, the salary will probably be hig

Ah, I didn't know it was a "thing". Looking it up comforts the idea that the post is silly and childish. I was indeed playing devil's advocate: it's not because the ad is clumsily worded that its author's intent was to exclude females.

I agree that the post's title is not very tactful or professional but I don't think it's sexist. The term "bro" refers to values like fraternity and solidarity. Even the word fraternity comes from the latin frater which means brother but

That's how most (if not all) banks work in France. They charge you overdraft fees as a loan at the maximum legal rate (which is about 20% annually, or 1.5% monthly according to Wolfram). That way, if you have a 2 € overdraft for one month,
