Academia has used this model for a long time. Endowed chairs are a good example. Universities like faculty members that can attract quality students, quality faculty, and most importantly lots of grand money.

Great question. No idea. The other thing to note is that a lot of the people who were involved then have moved on to other things and probably could not stay as involved (pointing at myself). It remains the best time I've had online.

We had a wonderful, thriving life science community [1] on Friendfeed, which we have not been able to replicate since. Some of that crowd even published a paper about it [2]. Most of the original crowd left sometime after the FB acquisition

Like some others on this thread I loved from Cubase to Ableton some years ago because of the UX, non-linear workflow, and friendlier licensing. All the controller action around it makes it even more awesome.

I turned down a couple of better name universities for a lesser known university (for graduate school) because my advisor there was top of his field. At that point, the university doesn't really matter. You look at the quality of work

cc1.4xlarge was the first Linux HVM EC2 instance. All new families support HVM (and some are HVM only) Should probably add a disclosure here. I ran the EC2 instance product management team for several years and continue to be involved.

You might want to try CFNcluster ( https://github.com/awslabs/cfncluster ) or Starcluster ( http://star.mit.edu/cluster/ ). If you are used to Grid Engine, you should find them pretty easy to use.
