Firefox's default scrolling behaviour didn't feel as responsive as Chrome. I changed a few settings below in about:config and now Firefox is a pleasure to use again. With the uBlock Origin, Cookie Autodelete and ClearURLs add-ons

One thing people should bear in mind when looking at Wasabi is that they have a 90 day minimum retention period for their PAYG plans. So if you upload a large file and overwrite it tomorrow, you'll be charged the storage fee for the da

Microsoft was the talking point in a couple of the articles, and they also own Github. The rest, could be considered under the tech giants umbrella -- so I'd say the links are topical and relevant.

> “The more the ice melts, the more sea surface is exposed, the more iodine is emitted, the more particles are made, the more clouds form, the faster it all goes,” Kirkby said. A positive feedback loop. Not good. Reminds me of a passage

Crikey, that's going to be confusing. Why not separate capture variables from comparison variables by using tuple-style brackets? RED = "red" colour = "green" match colour: case (RED,): print(f&

The most egregious violation I've seen is weather.com's cookie process. Go to https://weather.com/en-GB/ and click "Proceed with required cookies only". It's almost theatrical: first a spinning

I find it disconcerting how many people here are allowing a random service, most probably unheard of till now, to view their Spotify profile.

I wouldn't say so. People are using Vue.js in lieu of jQuery these days.

I love Noah Kalina. He also has an amusing newsletter filled with wacky and random anecdotes about life in rural NY. About the only subscribed email I look forward to receiving.

A good, and succinct, little introduction to fibre cables. I didn't realize the speed of light drops 31% inside silicon glass. Thanks for posting.

France is a primary actor in the EU seeking to regulate Facebook. It appears the company is now publicly calling out the country's shady activities on their own platform -- clever, and no doubt a good bargaining chip.

Typical nature of doing business in Europe. Arbitrary laws, borne in good faith but implemented so badly and erratically that everyone is forced to ignore them. The same laws are then wielded as a baton against whomever the state wishes to

I've been generally happy with startpage.com, they seem to mirror Google's results. And it works with dark mode. You don't get the contextual niceties that you get with Google though e.g. results for "70F in C".

I happily switched to Firefox Quantum when it first came out, but have periodically switched back to Chrome because Chrome feels faster and snappier. Not sure why that might be the case. I'm using the latest MacOS X with the same set o

Sounds like the Chinese system of incremental improvements. The value is in successful and fast execution, not the protection of the idea.

Good work by the BBC, introducing us to the technology that many of us use without even considering its complexities.

The arguments are mind-bogglingly outdated now. -- "Men and women are equal, but they have different missions". "Don't bog our women down in party fights, they have more noble tasks to complete." -- They really were

Catalina is a dumpster fire compared to Mojave. Waking up a Macbook Pro with two USB-C monitors plugged in, only one monitor comes on. I have to fiddle around by opening the laptop's lid or pressing Ctrl-Shift-Eject and waking it up ag

Android One held lots of potential, but Google managed to stuff that up too. They need to wrestle back control over the OS from the OEMs. Until they do, Android handsets will be disposable beyond a life of 2 years. Ironically, a company tha

"Minitel use peaked in 1993". The closest technology at that time outside France would have been bulletin board services (BBS). Each was run as a separate walled garden but many were linked by Fidonet. So not too dissimilar to Min

It's been progressively so throughout the entire 20th century. George Orwell wrote about the suburbanisation of rural life in his "Coming Up for Air" [1] back in the 1930s. Highly recommended. [1] https://www.goodr

I've read that Amazon warehouses mix every vendor's products with the same UPC code into the same box. If that's true, then it's pot luck whether you receive a legitimate or fake product.

Having a HomeKit home is easier than you think. An IKEA or Hue gateway connected to your router, a few lamp bulbs, and an iPad or Apple TV to control it all. That, at the least, will give you "Hey Siri turn on the lights".
