CSS have supported ‘display:table’ for 25 years, which is exactly “tables for layout”.

Yeah there was a period of time when IE didnt support display:table and ARIA hints wasnt as developed. So if you wanted to create accessible web sites with nice layout you had to resort to weird hacks, often using floats. Floats was never i

You could use ‘display:table’ in CSS if you wanted a tabular layout without using the table-tags. This has been part of CSS for 25 years. Grid is newer and more powerful.

CSS never recommended float/clear as an alternative to table-based layout. CSS had ‘display:table’ for when you needed a tabular layout without the semantic baggage of the table-tag.

Is accessibility for the visually impaired a cult? How could Google even work if content could not be seperated from its visual presention?

There is always a lot of confusion about this because “tables” can mean different things - it is both a set of structual elements in HTML and a layout model in CSS. CSS is “the right way” to control styling and layout, but that does not mea

It is a weird myth that CSS somehow discourages tables. CSS have supported styling html tables and ‘display:table’ (allowing a table-like layout without html-tables) for 25 years. Float and clear was grandfathered into CSS since they were a

> put a copy of the second half of the loop before the `do` But why is that better than just using a goto? Goto’s are usually discouraged because they make code hard to follow, but if avoiding the goto makes the code even more convoluted

You mean they wrote web pages with all the text in ALL CAPS? I highly doubt this was ever common.

It is just objectively incorrect that using uppercase saves space.

This was long before HTML though. HTML was always at least ASCII.

What? Upppercase and lowercase occupy the same amount of bits. ASCII uses 7 bits for all characters (although in practice 8 bits).

Automated tests are great, the problem described is over-reliance on mocking. Mocking should only be used for dependencies which have non-deterministic behavior or where it is otherwise impractical to use the real implementation.

Not the smallest unit, just an internal unit or component smaller than the whole of the system. The important thing is not the size of the code affected by the test, the important thing is that a test should verify a single requirement is

It is easy to create bad tests. I have seen an over-reliance on mocking giving high code coverage but still quite useless tests.

Here is a crazy idea: So csv itself is abiguous, but as a convention we could encode the options in the file name. E.g data.uchq.csv means utf8, comma-separated, with header, quoted.

It is not a question of popularity, it is a question of negotiating power. Actors have a strong union and the “name” actors are important enough for the success of movies that the studios are willing to accept these conditions.

Of course you can use third-party resources like fonts or JS libraries. What you can’t do is trick the client to download something from a third-party source which then spy on the customer.

I dont think people into astrology would call themselves atheists. They would probabably identify as “spiritual”. “Atheist religion” is more like NPL, scientology, UFO cults, The Singularity, simulation universe etc.

Pedantic comment perhaps, but “protagonist” does not mean “good guy” or “admirable”. It just means main character in a story.

This is basically how all Icelandic surnames work. They are patronyms or matronyms. Björk Guðmundsdóttir literally means “Björk, daughter of Guðmundur”, because that was the name of her father.
