I agree, and I definitely agree with the privacy sentiments and government overreach fears that people have on hacker news. All I'm saying is that if there was a significantly flawed system, I didn't see it and I was pretty deep.

While I can't comment on the UBL part, I will say that the stratfor part made me pee a little in my pants. I don't mean this to come off as condescending, but stratfor is one of the biggest jokes by people who do real intelligenc

That's if you assume terrorism is all about executing a suicide car bomb. There are other aspects like the funding, the discussion about group goals, the acquiring of arms, the distribution of resources, etc. It could be feasible, but

With the CIA, FBI, and other organizations I've worked for, you'd probably be right. The NSA is the only meritocracy that I've encountered in government work, although I only have a total of 10 years of experience so I haven

That's an interesting thought. BAH employees spend on a lot of time on what they call "the beach" while they're waiting for a switch to a new job. A lot of that time is spent on reading/writing training materials.

Well, I'll have to disagree in full with the points the author is trying to make. "A recent Bloomberg piece points to a 2012 report on terrorism which found that most serious terrorists steer clear of the most obvious platforms—ma

This is actually the most accurate article I've read about the NSA over this last week -- this is as a former NSA programmer/linguist. The good majority of posts about the topic have been great for a few laughs between my former

The average pay of contractors is between 70k-100k. The only ones making more than that are typically program managers for large contracts or other administrative folk who work on winning contracts for their company. Contractors are typica

There are graphic designers. I went to one to get a logo made for an internal web app I made. It's just that most powerpoints are made by interns and younger military folk.

Working with the FBI folks at the TSC (Terrorist Screening Center), being dumb and incompetent doesn't even begin to describe what I saw. The FBI is the most backwards agency technologically -- the leadership is mostly composed of people w

As I read more about software patents, and with what knowledge I've gained working with software, I remain opposed to the idea of software patents in general. My problem, though, is that I have no concept of what the arguments are that sup

VikingCoder, you're my e-hero. The article tried to throw out an idea for everyone to just think about and go "Hmm...interesting..." (as with most articles on hacker news). It amazes me that even with such a low character count, it was st

What you fail to realize is that the "terror watch list" you speak of doesn't hold people on it from just any hearsay. The articles said that the FBI did its due diligence and found no reason to continue an investigation on them. Think abo

It's a common thing when you're in the military to toss around disparaging comments about the person that recruited you. Personally, everything my recruiter had said was true: "When they ask you if you want to be a Nuc, say no." -- he coul
