Thanks. This is one of the reasons I always read the comments before the article on HN.

Doesn't work in the UK. We have to provide Nominet with documents for some domains. We can opt out of publishing them on the whois but the killer is that someone can contact Nominet and just pretty much ask for the data instead. Incide

So bureaucracy, cost cutting, management being dicks, no appreciation for family, inefficiency, boredom and detachment from the rest of the industry. Sounds exactly like the last 4 non-Google jobs I've had, including the current one. I

Utterly insane IMHO. If there's a single error in any temporal data, what happens? Even relatively reliable frequency/time standards (HP/Agilent come to mind) aren't 100% available.

This is not really a problem. Some thoughts: 1. Time is never the same on two different computers. 2. Time is different when you send it and receive it (speed of light). 3. Time isn't necessarily linear (time dilation). 4. Clocks drift

It may be comforting to know that I did exactly the same thing a few years before that and ended up at a shitty university and quit after 6 months. Best thing I ever did.

I'm trading an interesting job for plodding as you put it. The positive thing about plodding when you're experienced is that it doesn't kill you so you can do more interesting things.

Apt timing. I'm in the process of bailing out of London and heading about 200 miles west. Honestly I earn a shit ton of cash but I can't actually find anywhere that I can actually face putting the cash down on. I looked at a new d

I still believe that but we went past the mark and dissolved our communities into the same pitfalls as the commercial software. I consider windows 7, office 2010 and conversely Ubuntu pre-Unity with libreoffice to both hit the mark perfectl

I agree that he should be charged with fraud. However the purchasers should be charged with criminal negligence. It's up to them to check the claims of the device in question and test it before putting it in the hands of people.

If the base rate was higher then property would be a lesser investment. It's entirely crazy. I just asked for more cash and chucked the money on the commodities market. My portfolio is worth 178% what it was 12 months ago. Sod tax. Sod

Yes. I work in the finance sector and deal directly with the providers that sell this shit ironically. The tax relief was nullified instantly by the discussion with my employers that sort of went "give me another £10k or I go work some

Definitely agree there. I worry about the distribution/generation costs however. I think the main idea should be necessary travel only. In 2015 the idea that most of us need to commute tens of miles shouldn't even be a thought; a

That's because the options for mandatory pensions are: 1. High risk fund backed pension. Probably will decline in value due to fund saturation. 2. Low risk fund backed pension. You pay more in yearly fees and decline in value. I killed

Very good point. Also, at least here in the UK, cars seem to get scrapped after 12-15 years. They should really consider higher priced cars that are designed for a long life. My first car, a 1974 Land Rover series 3, is still going and will

We're less dicky in the UK and don't have masses of county specific bylaws so this is merely blackmail by threatening to punish.

What a bunch of total fucking assholes. That's not lobbying, that's blackmail. No joke but this sort of stuff makes a mockery of the positive things they have done recently. Ao much positive spin hiding the same asshattery.

Yes I know but they are far from radical redesigns in the last 20-30 years. I have a 1985 London Connections map (from my first tube journey!) and it's virtually no different to the current one. Just additions and a couple of removals

You cant redesign the tube map; its embedded in many minds and most people know it as the logical map of London. Even the London Connections map is based on it.
