Important note on anecdotes (especially on HN): There are many thousands of active users on Hacker News. If there are 50 active users over an hours time looking at a given topic, and those 50 active users know an average of 50 people fairly

As someone who majored in Physics and minored in Math, there was quite a bit of women in the Math department and a few women in Physics, but both had much more women than the entry level CS class I took, and I'm not sure there were any

Yes, but there's been no real singificant growth in the sector in the last ~2 years. See: DDD, SSYS, XONE, etc... All three companies are struggling very hard when the future was so bright. Yes, there are other companies, but these are

I'm not so sure this is actually "available" spectrum, as it is unused-by-carrier spectrum. For example: the large dark spot in New Mexico is probably that way for a reason: The VLA is smack in the middle.

Yeah that's definitely true, I tried to allude to that with the ranges example, "Elvis" would be good for an index, whereas "Chris" or "Matt" you might as well do a full table scan.

The biggest problem with a procedural/explicit query is a dynamic system. Without a query planner, you don't have the luxury of a system rewriting your queries. When Table A ~ Table B, but then Table B >> Table A, your queri

You can find yellow-hair chicken and other breed at some Asian markets. I like the Asian markets, especially because it's trivial to get a variety of breeds and cuts, but it's much harder to get any sort of provenance info about t

Are you sure that's round trip? It's at the extreme physical limit of being possible, as the distance to Boston, for example, is greater than 12k km as the crow flies, and the speed of light in fiber is about 70% that of light.

This is the number one reason why I hate sharing trails with cyclists. I've never seen a horse going over 6MPH, which is a light jogging speed, and they tend to go even slower downhill. Set a universal speed limit of 10mph on the trai

Yep, that's it. We used to calibrate with laser shots into the night sky, but direct excitation of the sky with the LINAC is much better, because you are directly measuring fluorescence.
