Whether it was a mistake is rather a matter of perspective: I'm sure the Microsoft folks didn't think it was wrong. But that aside: I realize that it may not have read that way, but I think what Mono does is an elegant solution to an unfort

Right, understood. My particular beef was that the function to create a managed Mono string from a UTF-8 encoded unmanaged string was Marshal.PtrToStringAnsi (which is even more confusing if you are familiar with the Windows string encoding

There are quirks here and there; I use mono through unity3d, so that informs the things I notice. Specifically interop with unmanaged DLLs is: well, more guesswork than I would like. For instance, Marshal.PtrToStringAnsi (function that crea

I think at one point the survey listed the number of samples; now it just seems to be percentages which isn't as useful. Anecdotally the survey has a lot of respondents (as in, a majority of the Steam userbase) but you never know.

The Steam hardware survey: http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey now includes software, which includes Silverlight.

Your observation is likely correct, but I was talking about sorting two or more independent sets, not partitioning the sort of one set; assuming that a "proper" (non benchmark) application will have several workloads waiting to be processed

Outside of a benchmark- that's latency you can hide though, right? Without reference to the specifics of this situation, which I don't claim to know much about, the co-processor can be sorting one dataset in it's local memory while the CPU

This happened to me too just this past week; the only resolution was a full system restore. Pretty shocking.

That "billion euro company" wouldn't happen to be a bookie, would it? The prospect of a thin wall between the proven addiction machine of "social" games and actual cash money gambling makes me a little queasy.

Does the color scheme (of things like the SMS app and menus) remind anyone else of CGA? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_Graphics_Adapter#Standard...

Maybe I'm missing something here: Java is bad because of "dirty little secret(s) of JIT technology". But doesn't LLVM IR need to be JIT-ed as well?

The idea (for the interpolating case) is that drawing occurs between two physics states; say at time0 physics has state0 (position, orientation etc) and at time1 physics has state1. Then the state at draw time is an interpolation of the sta

Check out 'Elevated' - winner of the 4k PC demo category at Breakpoint 2009. It's a fly-through of a realistic looking procedurally generated terrain model with music and some fancy post processing effects all squeezed into a <4096 byte

You can use the SPEs just fine under PS3 Linux - plenty of information on cellperformance.com; access to the GPU (and possibly other juicy parts, like certain IO devices) is restricted (so no hardware acceleration for graphics).

techcrunch mentioned "...Flektor is custom code built on Flex..." in this article : http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/05/15/myspace-to-acquire-flek... . Which one might take to imply at least a healthy chunk of it is Flash/Flex/Actionscript.
