Is it just me, or are there more women in the technology workforce in these pictures than there are in most technology workplaces today? Is this a regression in society?

I upvoted you and downvoted him because I really don't want HN to degrade into Reddit/Digg/4Chan/etc. I come here specifically because it's _not_ one of those, and has a good signal-to-noise ratio (e.g. relevant conversations not overrun by

Overly wordy Java coders would still be overly wordy Pythonistas, except the Python culture enforces the "Python is not Java" mentality so they would be corrected on almost every turn, plus the code tutorials and examples from which they le

Is there an updated version of this? Would be really good to see the full list of improvements in this space.

Au contraire IBM get it, they got on board with big industry trends a long time ago, and keep surviving (not thriving, mind you, but keeping up).

Very true, I've been in the working alone situation, and I think it led to some bad habits (then again, I've been in big corporations which led to even worse habits, so... yeah).

Nice, this goes into some ground not covered in other python testing discussions. Great code examples. :-) These are the kinds of articles I come to hacker news to find.

It's "possible" ... I saw a program about CCD on PBS. There are parts of China where they've killed off all the bees in traditional farming areas. The video showed entire fields of workers holding jars of pollen and taking feather dusters,

I've met the author, and considering he's one of the founding members of Ubuntu I would read this article in a different light than most of the comments on here. I think it's more of a call to action to make us think not just what Open Sour

:-) More people should use the opinion warning (Opinion warning) They're basically the same level of overall goodness. Django may be better at some things, Rails on others. The whole penis-size-measuring contest between both camps is kind o

I've been using Python for the last two years and I totally love it. While it does support functional paradigms, it's not actually a functional programming language. Having said that, I would love to pick up Clojure next. Realistically thou

Interesting, we were just discussing this at work, which app to use. One of the requirements is 'must work on Linux (Ubuntu) because that's what pretty much all the developers use. Maybe we'll give this a try.

This is by far the best quote I've heard about reasons people liked these technologies before Oracle but not anymore: "So unless we want to pay large and increasing amounts of money to Oracle, which is a mathematical certainty because it i

We use Ubuntu LTS at work because of the stability. On my laptop at home though (which I only really use for watching movies, and for hacking on side-projects that one day may become HN stories) I'm always on cutting edge Ubuntu. I love the

There area lot of "incubators" that do pretty much exactly this... but the seminar never ends, and the list of services they can charge for doesn't either.

There's probably truth to that. I don't remember Java error output being that bad back when I worked with it years ago. It does seem like many of the lines in Groovy output are groovy plumbing, like which closure was called.

I'm a Pythonista working on Groovy (and Grails) and I have a similar complaint about the error messages given by the Java stack. Groovy is one hell of a groovy language but the Java error output that it gives is comically long, and overall

For all we know it could be running on an Ubuntu server using Mono. They had Miguel DeIcaza on their podcast once and said they would make sure it can run on Linux too.
