Former Freebase, current Google engineer here: First of all, let me say that I'm glad more people are thinking/working in the space of triples. Even unstructured ones like this. But when there's no semi-strict schema, it gets really, really

I'll point out that her Freebase entry (sourced by Wikipedia) contained exactly the incorrect data until it was fixed. See http://www.freebase.com/m/09v5l5c?links&lang=en&hist... Freebase, owned by Google, is part of its structure

Exactly this. Great response! It takes a little more thought, but in the end is the better way of doing things.

Of course the bubble will burst. It's what bubbles do. That said, the idea that SF will plunge into Detroit levels of destitution is preposterous. Even if tech leaves the bay entirely and money flows entirely elsewhere, more people will rat

Now there's a shocking-blogpost-title-with-little-to-add. TL;DR from the article: The Valley's business model is spreading. And I don't think anyone will disagree. But comparing to Detroit? Nope, sorry. When I can buy a house in Palo Alto f

+1 to exactly this. Just because a field is new doesn't mean it isn't pervasive. We had a required "computer skills" class at my high school (over a decade ago) that was, by all measures of the term, useless. Any of my friends who were prof

Okay, sit down, and let me elaborate on why this is a bad idea. I was going to post a kneejerk reaction, namely "This idea is bad and you should feel bad", but that wouldn't help the discussion. So let me assume you mean the best. Let me as

That's kind of a strawman argument. cyclicGroupOfDegree3 is a terrible name, unless you need to be really specific about degrees. cyclicGroup, please. (and I could imagine: cyclicGroup.degree() == 3) dP is also a terrible name. My first tho

So I did EECS at Cal. And while some of these things are definitely in the category of software engineering and not computer science, I have to say that, in the few years between my undergrad and today, I've kept in touch with the community

This seems incredibly useful; for someone who wants to try it out, which is a good, open-source, cross-platform CL to try it on? The example uses SBCL, but I know none of the tradeoffs.

No snark intended. I mean only to recognize BSD in the discussion as having made another choice. And yes, Linux custom-built software goes into /usr/local without a hitch. But really, the question comes down to layers of abstraction. Is /bi

And BSD users have been doing this forever. I know I've read about why Linux is divergent, but I forget why.
