I can't speak to China, but having spent most of the past decade in India and Sri Lanka I can say the problem there is that nobody is willing to unilaterally disarm. Everybody agrees that bakshish is deadweight loss and inefficient, bu

That's how pari mutuel betting works; the odds are set by the bettors betting and unknown until the book closes. That's in fact the entire argument behind Kalshi: the betting is the means of odds discovery.

Hover is done by the client telling the compositor it would like the cursor to change its shape if it is over a certain area the client is drawing. But the client does not know where the cursor is or where on the screen the client is (or ev

Neither way works in Wayland. A program can know where it was clicked but not where the pointer was immediately before that. For that matter Wayland doesn't have a concept of "the" pointer; there may be multiple pointers.

Everybody wants to use LLMs to produce things and absolutely nobody wants to consume the things that LLMs produce and this is the fundamental reason this is all going to collapse unless we find a way for producers to pay consumers to consum

Ah, but now instead of one old difficult-to-maintain way of allowing an application to draw on a rectangle on the screen, we have five (and counting!) new and somewhat incompatible ways to do it. Progress.

Sort of. If your software wants to do something like "know where the pointer is" it won't work on sway.

As predicted, we will re-invent X11 one feature at a time. Maybe someday soon a Wayland window will be able to know its own screen position.

The DACs in most bluethooth earbuds are absolute garbage, but I think the bigger issue is people are tired of both having to charge them and having to keep track of where they are.

But at that point it just becomes yet another escape sequence game; there's not really a solution here given that by design we only have one band to communicate with.

This. My aversion to LLMs is much more that I have low risk tolerance and the tails of the distribution are not well-known at this point. I'm more than happy to let others step on the land mines for me and see if there's better un

This feeds the adoption problem, though: a lot of companies are thinking "why settle for the current models when even the vendors are saying the models in six months will be exponentially better? Let's let the early adopters work

I mean, it's ultimately a string, and the measurement of the entropy of a string is well-studied. The LLM might start gaming that with variable names so you'd need to do the AST instead. I may actually try something like that; coo
