I think that in that case it should return false instead of 0 so (int)$val === false means that the variable is not a number. Right now I guess that the alternative is using is_numeric and then casting to int if possible.

Yes, I agree that disabling the SIM cards makes little sense. I wonder why they did that. Perhaps they think that if customers haven't upgraded their phones yet it's because they don't intend to.
