All difficult questions that will need to be answered in the affirmative if the web is going to survive. The only well-funded player that is really incentivized to make all these things happen is Google, as literally every other megacorp wa

I wish! It's not that I don't want to have a free personal assistant that can answer all my questions with zero effort of my own. And it's not like it couldn't happen, but I don't think it's inevitable or right

Why were you using a web search if you didn't want to access the web (find a website)? Openai says don't use chatgpt for search. Microsoft says double check everything Sydney tells you. Is there an argument for LLMs replacing sear

Meh, it's just a default. Users can switch away. Without this revenue, Mozilla would die and there would be /less/ competition in the browser space. In the car of Apple, nearly all people would probably choose Google anyway.

most of the time the actual reason to decline the shelter is that they're not allowed to use their drugs there.

I think at the very least it casts doubt on the validity of classifying their situation as "homelessness", which strongly suggests that all they require to be ok again is shelter.

Yeah this sounds like Apple shaking down Google for additional revenue, rather than Google somehow sidestepping competition. Google is paying for the privilege of being able to compete in the browser space on iOS, because if they didn'

what platform is not an echo chamber? For example, if you don't want to read tangentially related pet peeves every time bigtechco is in the news, you stop coming to HN. You stop coming to HN, and only complainers are left.

s/Google search/the web And people think chatgpt is going to save us, when all it's going to do is make the web, and therefore search results, ever more nonsensical.

my user experience is pretty great. Any time I run into a video on a blog somewhere and realize it's hosted at yt, it's a huge relief to me. What video streaming service is more reliable or higher quality? yt shorts are very succe

By usage metrics, yt shorts are very successful. I don't think they've proven very easily monetizable yet though.

The yt of today and the yt of 2006 are very different services. If anything, Google bought a userbase and a brand name and built its own service from there.

why is it apple's goal to "hurt Google"? With MSFT it's obvious that Satya is trying to distract a competitor in cloud, but chatgpt is hardly going to "kneecap" Google. Satya is hyping it with all the credibili

That would require better speech recognition. Judging by automated subtitles, it's not there yet. And I don't think YouTube videos tend to have better veracity than the web at large. Maybe YouTube videos can be used to train model

Reading financial documents will only give you an illusion that you have some greater chance of success at stock picking. Amateur investors only buy index funds, anything else is speculation.

The Fed definitely does try to manipulate markets by talking a big game they may or may not follow through with. The Fed has one set of projections and the bond market has another.

I see a lot of criticism towards modern software engineer interviewing techniques, but never a solution offered that would catch and reject BS. Your comment comes off as "hire a person because you get along with them, don't worry
