Agreed. I feel the need to learn new things just to keep my learning muscle strong. Sometimes I actually need to learn a new thing, and if I haven't done it in a while, it's scarier.

And yet the main reason Elon is famous and rich and owns Twitter is because he is a very successful communicator and Twitter's most adept user. I think you will find that the people who work at Ford are, by and large, "car guys&qu

In addition to that, security should probably be a consideration at the design phase of any feature or product. As in, an internal team should be vetting design and critical areas of the code itself. But the culture there only cares about &

Size is correlated with resources. Microsoft should have the resources to throw at this problem. Unfortunately the Microsoft approach to software engineering is to set a bunch of monkeys loose on a room full of keyboards, rather than to spe

I think the difference is what's considered "average". I'm pretty sure the average rural life has always been somewhat unexciting and hard, and that hasn't changed. Now you can compare your life to the urban/mo

So the UK was a dominant power 90 years ago and now it's a minor player, meanwhile the US is dominating... but yeah, it's the US that's got capitalism wrong. Okay. Perhaps it's your socialized medicine that is causing do

Poor people in cities are in the same situation.* The geographical distinction is I think a red herring that goes away when you control for wealth. The article mentions wealthy people in Colorado, which is mostly not very urban. *Even rich

On the other side of the globe? I guess that wouldn't cross my mind. I do like the idea that there are well paid jobs that don't require many years of schooling. Seems good for social mobility.

My pixel 5 is still going strong and has plenty of battery. I have noticed degradation, but it's still enough to get through a day or more depending on use. The one thing that eats the battery alive is Instagram, which is great as it g

I think he means Google phones, ie Pixel. I am not surprised because they've been advertising pixel really hard, and they are good phones. Still, it seems a lot more likely to eat into Samsung than Apple market share.

I don't even know who you think I'm dismissing. Mine is more of a generalized ennui directed at HN as a whole. I don't think Google has actually done anything. The bar for experimenting with new code in Chromium is pretty low

But the usual HN paranoid anti-Google retort is that Google happily charges advertisers for fake ad impressions. Now if Google cares about real impressions it's still terrible no good very bad evil.

Chrome has nowhere near 95% market share so it would be hard to make the same case against them. Given that it's open-source and anyone can roll and distribute a tweaked version of Chromium (and many have, notably Microsoft), it's
