Interesting. I have the 4K Apple TV and sometimes apps feel extremely sluggish. Netflix clearly has some sort of compounding problem (maybe a memory leak) where simply scrolling through the app gets progressively slower until it’s nearly co

But what’s the theory then? If there was a widespread milder version of covid going around in places long before the deadly one took hold, then the newer deadlier strain would still have to be transmitted into each region separately. I don’

I’ve heard many stories like this, but I’m wondering how it could have had that much transmission that long ago without there being a noticeable number of unusual pneumonia deaths in those regions.

You just weren’t doing anything that depended on your model of cosmology. I don’t think that says much about how tolerant of bad models the modern world is. The engineers making GPS required good models of physics, but their efforts probabl

Focusing on window-based instead of component-based responsive queries was a mistake (or at least, it has overstayed its welcome). CSS Grid actually has some component-based responsiveness with auto-fit/auto-fill and minmax, although i

AMC’s movie ticket subscription service requires waiting for and chatting with an ostensibly human support agent in order to cancel a subscription. If that’s a real loophole in the CA law then they should obviously patch it.

5 people is probably hyperbolic, but I bet it's a lot closer to a reasonable head count than the head count they actually have.

I’ve never thought of Slack as a tool primarily for remote work. I suspect the vast majority of their customers are non-remote companies.

Why would it be 2x the normal evening peak hours? Yes, normally maybe second shift workers and the rolling shifts of people going out to eat would reduce normal peak usage slightly, but I can’t imagine it being 2x.

I mean it goes back long before the word “globalization” was used to mean “anything I don’t like that involved more than one country.” There was very long-distance trade thousands of years ago. Not every raw material you might want will exi

Well then what’s the alternative? Using the same spacer component everywhere is bad because the designer might want to change the spacing in only one spot? Okay. But what if the designer wants to change the spacing in all spots? That’s a mu

Interesting. I hadn't noticed that, although last week I did order a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter that is slated to arrive this week and is on the low end of "essential" for my new work-from-home life.

docker-sync helps a little bit, and so does limiting Docker to 1 CPU core, but I still routinely get spurts 100% CPU from Docker that despite supposedly being on 1 core still grind my machine to a halt.

It doesn't even take that much. Docker Desktop on MacOS is widely known to be terrible and have extremely poor performance. Running webpack-dev-server with filewatching through Docker nearly grinds my 2017 Macbook Pro to a halt. Obviou
