I still remember playing Shadows Over Riva where you had magic to see through walls or teleport to a distance thus completely avoiding combat with though enemies. Sure, if none of the mages in your party had those it made the game much hard

Mandrake 7 was the Linux distro that made me switch away from Windows. I used Windows 98 at the time and did not like XP much. Although there was lot to be desired, it worked much better than Win98, so I made the switch and never looked bac

I wish every game developer read this. Some really popular games have bad camera movement. For example, Limbo has poor vertical camera and you have to make "leap of faith" often. Trine has problem with scene transition with multip

Actually I see PHP's duct-tape interface as an advantage. It allows you to express the data structures and manipulate them in less verbose manner, which results in less code, which is easier to debug and maintain.

Separate the data you are sure you need often and only store that in the database. Store everything else in the textual logs.

This reminds me of people who say: "JavaScript is designed for embedding in web pages. Node.js developers are crazy too." The Right Tool for the job is not the same for everyone. Unless you can state exact reasons what makes PHP b

If you need to grep logs on regular basis, you're doing it wrong. Store important data in the database so that you can query it efficiently. Keep logs for random searches when something unexpected happens. I log gigabytes per day, but

Take a loot at some open source projects. The Battle For Wesnoth (c++) has many more contributors than FreeCol (Java). I'm sure that number of C# developers in the world who develop open source stuff is even smaller. If your main goal

There's a reason why queues are more performant than threads. See node.js and nginx for real-world examples. The OS is dumb and does not understand the nature of load. If we applied your logic, everyone would still run Apache instead o

To sum it up: node.js runs only 4 background threads. Be aware of this. No big deal really. I have multiple servers running node.js under load for 3+ years and never had an issue with this. In fact, I found it helpful. If your database is u

I wish I could upvote this more than once. In the company I worked for for 10+ years (2002-2013) we had a huge web application used heavily by 500+ users daily. I have seen a lot, and the one-time-token approach is the only bulletproof way

From my experience, the problem with open source projects and Mac is that many developers who contribute to open source run Linux and possibly Windows, but do not have access to expensive Apple hardware. So they cannot test on Mac and have
